Starbucks Splash Sticks Now in Hawaii

Hawaii Starbucks patrons, you are now safer. The new splash sticks have arrived in Hawaii to prevent any mishaps drinking your hot Pikes Place roast (or other favorite SBUX beverage).

I saw these little green plugs at a nearby Starbucks and wondered what they were (sorry no picture, I need an iPhone). The idea is simple. To prevent accidental spilling of hot coffee, you insert these sticks in the lid to plug up the opening. Remove when you want to drink. A bolt of genius to whoever thought of this. :S

And for Coco Bean an environment question. If these splash sticks are made of recycled materials, is this a good use? Or do these sticks make more trash?

My first thought is that it is good to use recycled materials, but will people actually separate these in their trash or take these sticks to the recycling drop-off locations? Or do these locations actually take these sticks?

So IMO they just make more trash. :(
