*639# to Check Your AT&T Upgrade Staus

Thanks to Doc Rock for this tip. On your AT&T serviced iPhone, you can (voice)call *639# then shortly thereafter, you’ll get a text message letting you know if you can upgrade your phone, namely to a forthcoming iPhone 5.

If your current AT&T service plan is almost up, you should see something like this.

    Just note that even though you get this message, what it doesn’t say is that you still have to pay the current subsidized prices. So it’s $32 PLUS whatever the iPhone 5 pricing is with a new 2 year contract. From these texts it makes it seem like all you have to do is pay $32 and you get the new iphone.

    Not the case.

      Good point! I never assumed to factor out the cost of hardware, especially for Apple’s iPhone. My main concern was my AT&T contract. Although having bought my iPhone 4 on opening day, I figured my contract expiration (and upgrade to an iPhone 5) was imminent.
