One Quality of a Leader
An open-ended commentary about the most looked for quality in a leader.
Consistency, integrity, sacrifice, charisma, humility, vision, principles, honor, passion, ninja skills, communication, clarity – the list goes on.
Clarity is key. Clarity is the key component, because you need to have clarity in your communication to the people you lead, and to the people you serve, you need to have clarity of mission, purpose and passion so people want to follow you, and you need clarity of purpose to wade through all the information that will come your way to find the truth, or at least the most relevant information.

Be Translucent and Read the Technologists Manifesto
First, read the excellent introduction of the purpose of a technologist and why you should be translucent. Then read the Technologist Manifesto…, or Things Everyone in IT Should Know.
New Starbucks Drink… We Don’t Have
Starbucks now offers the Marble Mocha Macchiato, “an intense sip of espresso, with a double dose of chocolate indulgence – white and dark chocolate.”
Sounds good. Too bad the Hawaii-based Starbucks won’t have these, well except for the one in the Airport. Someday…

Google has a Store
Never did see this, but Google has an online store where they sell Google branded products. All kinds of stuff from clothes, office items, dog collars, and baby clothes. They even sell gear with the Blogger logo. Neat!

Blogging for a Living?
Don’t quit your day job quite yet. It ain’t easy making a living off of blogging alone. Some people have done it, but it’s waaay hard.
You should have at least 100 pages of high-quality content in the can.
Maybe my rants about work could qualify as “high-quality” content?
New Video Content for iTMS
The iTunes Music Store has added more content to its video section. New to the party is the all time teen favorite Saved by the Bell. What ever happened to Screech? There’s also exclusive, paid clips of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue and some Schoolhouse Rock clips. Lolly, lolly, lolly, get your adverb here!

Happy Valentine’s Day
Happy Valentine’s Day to all. Be sure to tell your SO and kids that you love them!
If you’re still looking for a last minute gift, how about a treat at Elements Hawaii? They offer hair styling, facials, pedicures, and massages. They even offer a couples suite where you and your SO can both get massages at the same time. Or how about a nice gift from Hilo Hattie? Lots of choices for guys and gals. And lastly, for the adventurous men and women, there’s always a night out at Club 939. Okay, I think I covered all my advertising plugs.

Are You a High Maintenance Office Employee?
At work, do you show these traits?
- demanding
- poor as team players
- uncompromising
- disrespectful
- intimidating
- emotional
- uncooperative
- defiant
- erratic
- driven to succeed
If so, congratulations, you may be a select few high-maintenance employees who could be “innovators and the people who are most often responsible for a business’s success.”
Silly me, I had it all wrong. These guys at work aren’t turds. They’re actually high-maintenance employees who are vital to our one team. I just need to get used to them being “annoying and egotistical” and needing “validation at all times.”

Researching Searching
Looking at adding a search feature to Pulpconnection either via Google AdSense for Search or Technorati. I’m starting to forget about posts so I figured a search feature would help me find stuff on my own site.
I briefly tried adding Google’s search, but it seemed like this was a typical Google search, scouring the entire Internet not just my site. Maybe I was doing it wrong? So for now, I’ll go with the search feature from Technorati.

Traits of Popular Web Design
Seems like the visual design of web sites is becoming simpler. Web Design from Scratch lists common traits of good looking sites. The rundown:
- Simple layout
- 3D effects, used sparingly
- Soft, neutral background colours
- Strong colour, used sparingly
- Cute icons, used sparingly
- Plenty of whitespace
- Nice big text
I like this statement:
In general, the more white space the better. It’s very rare that I look at a page and think: “Gosh, they really need to cram that page up a bit!”
