While the lines do converge to a single pay station, and continue onto a single pick up point, these are variables that can be controlled (for the most part) by McDs. The biggest variable is the time it takes the customer to look at the menu, and order their food. The double lane order station is supposed to assist in the reduction of this variable. McDs has probably studied it to death, and found that it helps their servicing times.

Thanks for the info. Never did see the drive thru at this popular McDonalds. I think it's primarily done to alleviate traffic lines snaking out to the streets??

What they do is alternate taking orders between the two ordering boxes. So in actuality, it's still just one big line. Dunno why they do this, things still back up the same if it's busy.
