Takes about 45 minutes to download and another 30 minutes to actually install.  My install went smoothly but Lion made some changes that affect me at work (no Samba for Windows file share for example).

Me too.  I have mixed feelings about this Lion feature.  Can’t decide if I like it or not.  Probably like on my home computer but dislike on my work computer.

Try it.  It’s kinda cool to see all your stuff restored in front of you.  But then again, you might be instantly reminded of how much work you still have to do. 😉

As I read the first paragraph of your post I was like, “there’s no option to turn off resume or something like that?” But then you answered that afterward.

I can understand why that would be helpful (and also your point of view as well). As for myself, I actually close down all my apps and save everything before I shut down (a habit from high school computing).

Maybe I should live dangerously and just leave everything open when I shut down?
