I kinda suspected there was a term for my condition, and I now know its name. I suffer from tsundoku which is defined thusly:

The acquiring of reading materials followed by letting them pile up and subsequently never reading them.

Yes, I have a collection of books that maybe, just maybe, I cracked the spine on. Otherwise, they are in pristine condition (just a little dusty). I intended to read and learn from these books, but history has taught me otherwise, and now I acknowledge that I won’t read them.

I have gotten better over the years with the stagnant books acting as a reminder of this wasteful habit. Okay, okay, I did have a relapse buying (and not reading) that Sports Illustrated issue on Kobe Bryant’s career.

So while I suffer from tsundoku, I acknowledge it and vow to stay away from Amazon Prime Reading.

Forgot to post these pictures from Barnes and Noble that I took over the Chirstmas holidays. I had forgotten what it felt like to walk around a bookstore.

I gotta admit that even with the resources of the Internet, this magazine has an excellent collection of all things WordPress.

Coloring books for adults is trendy right now. Check out the (growing) collection available.

Even Candy Crush has a themed coloring book.

Now where was this all this time? A comic book that you can color in.

But Barnes and Noble has more than books. Their toy section has interesting items like these Pop characters. My favorite from Big Hero 6 is Fred in his old school Japanese bad guy costume.

The Predator in Pop form is still freaky looking.

I gotta make sure to visit more often. All kinds of interesting goodies to see!

For today only (that’s Saturday, January 26, 2013), you can buy Guy Kawasaki’s latest APE (Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur-How to Publish a Book) at a steep discount. Normally $24.99 for the print version and $9.99 for the Kindle eBook, today’s special price is only $1.99 for the Kindle eBook – $1.99! As in two bucks.

On top of the cheap price, this version has recent additions telling you the simple truth of how you can write and sell your own book. I’ve started reading my copy and hey, even I can understand this foreign topic of creating a book. But don’t worry, I doubt you’ll see a Pulpconnection: The Book coming any time soon. What Guy’s laid out in the Author section has good advice to determine if you got what it takes to be an author.

There’s still time for this amazing deal, and I’m pretty sure you got two bucks to spare. Go now and buy APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur-How to Publish a Book.

Update: Congratulations to Tom for being the first (and second) commenter. You have to like the proposed title of his forthcoming literary work, How I beat the system and won stuff from Hawaii’s hippest blogger. Was it the play of Mario Chalmers? Was it the three point barrage of Mike Miller and Shane Battier? Could be, but as librarians will point out, it was LeBron James new reading habit that fueled the post season victories.

So if you too want to be successful, you need to read a few books to clear then focus your mind. Here is LeBron’s reading list that earned him his first NBA Championship.

In this digital age of the iPhone, iPad, iBooks, and even the Kindle, owning a printed copy of the authorized Steve Jobs autobiography seems like the best way of holding on to this icon.

Even at 656 pages, it’s all about Steve. Read the description:

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Appleâ€s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Poke the Box is all over the place, but the simple message is to start. Nothing will get done if you don’t start, but not only start, but finish aka “ship the product.” Somewhere in this book you’re bound to recognize a situation you’ve been in or are in and see how it all relates. I’m definitely going to replay this audiobook and let the words soak in.
