We’re talking internal and external. I think this might be number 4, maybe 5, but I’ve lost count.

I thought it might be due to vog or HFMD or maybe it’s just the Windward air? I don’t know, but with every WDC drive failure, I get to try different brands of hard drives. Maxtor’s been good to me recently. Hmm, Toshiba drives on sale this week.

I got my iMac back from the Apple Store after one week in the shop, and what was the fix? Change out the original WDC internal drive and replace with a Seagate (ST3500630AS Q). Fortunately, my data (approximately 200 GB) was recovered though I had a fresh install of Leopard on the drive and none of my apps so my machine was pseudo usable. Restoring from Time Machine again did the trick.

Normally, this repair would cost about $400, but AppleCare took care of that bill. Lessons learned from this experience?

  • Beware drives made by WDC
  • Get Leopard and use Time Machine
  • Buy AppleCare

My recent iMac went down this morning, and this one looks bad. The internal drive isn’t acting quite right. The boot CD Disk Utility can see the drive, but it looks unformatted.

I bought Leopard for Time Machine and it’d better work!! But first have to figure out what’s up the main drive. Maybe I’ll try resetting the System Management Controller to see if that helps any. Maybe it is the Western Digital internal drive like people in this post are reporting.

There’s an updated Drive Manager software too, but I don’t know think you need it.
