I had never come across this before and only recently inherited an used Nintendo Wii, but it looks like the Wii still has some tricks left. Released in 2006 and discontinued in 2013, the Wii hardware supports other uses like running emulators of other gaming consoles. By modding the Wii with the Homebrew Channel, users can install emulators for the NES, Genesis, and other old school favorites.

Overall, the steps look straightforward and well documented. As a follow-up project, you can also connect an external USB drive to hold and launch games from. To be on the safe side, it seems a wired controller is recommended, not only for navigating the menus, but then when you have your retro games going, the control and button layout of the wired controller makes more sense for games from yesteryear.

From our neighbors in the north comes the Nintendo Wii Mini. Yes, mini, and it’s only available in Canada. The Mini is a stripped down Wii removed of all online features. But at $99 and still able to play over 1400 disc-based Wii games, the Wii Mini shouldn’t be overlooked.

Well, if you can get one anyways.

Nintendo Wii Banned from Military Facilities?

I’m not a hard core gamer and have not been closely following the developments of Sony’s PS3 or the Nintendo Wii. After a recent visit to Toys R Us, I now know the Nintendo Wii will be for sale on November 19, just in time for Christmas shopping. But according to some Defense facilities instructions, the Wii may be a banned item, and here’s why. This is a sampling of items prohibited from Defense facilities:

Ammunition
Fireworks
Molotov Cocktail
Pipe Bomb
Black Jack
Slingshots
Billy/Sand Club
Nunchakus
Sand Bag: Partially filled with sand and swung like a mace
Metal (Brass) Knuckle
Dirk or Dagger
Switch Blade or Butterfly Knife
Knife with a blade (cutting edge) longer than 4 inches
Razor with Unguarded blade.
Pipe, Bar or Mallet to be used as a club.
Compressed Air or Spring Fired Pellet/BB gun
Tear Gas/Pepper Spray Weapon
Pistol, Revolver, Rifle, Shotgun or any other Firearm
Bows, Crossbows or Arrows
Bowie Style Hunting Knife

Looking at the box of a Wii, you will notice what ships with the console.
