Stay with the hot version of this drink. The tasty qualities of the SBL are lost when cold. Just tastes like an iced caramel macchiato.

Oh and mobile order using the Starbucks app really defeats the slow lines at the mall.

Starbucks Molten Chocolate Latte First Taste

Molten chocolate? In a Starbucks drink? Probably more hyperbole than reality, but I needed to try the limited run of Starbucks creations for Valentine’s Day. Along with the Molten Chocolate Frappuccino and Molten Hot Chocolate, the Molten Chocolate Latte is only available through February 14, 2016.

So how was it? It’s definitely not like Roy’s Molten Chocolate Cake that takes 20 minutes to heat, but make no mistake, there is chocolate in this drink. Melted chocolate chips, mocha-infused steamed milk, mocha-espresso whipped cream, and mocha-espresso drizzle, yeah, that’s a lot of chocolate. The chocolate isn’t sweet though but does impart a richness to the drink. Of course, a drink made in mere minutes can’t compare to the richness and depth of true molten chocolate, but the name of the drink sure sounds delectable. To me, the hot drink is okay. Maybe I’d like a touch of sweetness to it. One issue I have is with the whipped cream topping. It’s really cold, and the drink is hot. In the first few sips of my MCL, the hot and cold combo became a lukewarm sensation that detracted from the drink.

Overall, if you like the regular Starbucks Mocha, then think of the Molten Chocolate Latte as a deeper mocha. I am curious to try this drink cold since the idea of a cold molten drink tickles my mind. The whipped cream will definitely match the cold profile of the iced MCL, but the chocolate chips will probably be chunks floating around.

A CPL Is Better Hot than Cold

After gagging on my first (icded) Starbucks Chestnut Praline Latte, my second experience with a hot CPL was much better. This drink is definitely better hot than cold. You can smell the spices and appreciate the scents accentuating the mild nutty flavors. And without a straw for this hot CPL, I wasn’t concerned about sucking up and gagging on a praline crumb sunken on the bottom of the drink.

So if you haven’t yet sampled the CPL, my suggestions is try it hot but still be wary of a wayward praline crumb.

A Ghetto Latte in Action

Over the weekend, I witnessed the mythical “ghetto latte” at the new Starbucks kiosk in Ala Moana. What’s a ghetto latte? That’s the unofficial nickname for a bare minimum espresso-based (or even coffee-based) drink. Pay for only two shots of espresso but ask for the drink in a large cup (grande or venti) then fill the rest of the cup with (free) milk from the bar. That’s ghetto as in poor or cheap.

I couldn’t hear the full order called out, but I did hear the part about a venti cup. Notice the empty space at the top that’s getting filled. Milk or creamer was already added when I took the pic and now a second carafe is about to be drained.

One Sip Review of Starbucks Caramel Flan Latte

After my initial sip of the new Starbucks Caramel Flan Latte, here’s my review:

This is darker than I would’ve thought.

I was expecting sweet, light, custardy. But instead, the drink tastes “dark” like the chocolate. There is, of course, the caramel whip cream which helps balance out the entire drink.
