That was my impression of my first taste of the new Mtn Dew Major Melon, charged with Watermelon. Reminded me of a 7-Eleven slurpee – no specific flavor but the general taste/sweetness and the “bite.” Overall, this drink is good, so good that half of the 20 oz bottle is now gone while writing these few sentences. While sweet, it’s a different kind of sweet compared to the orginal Dew flavor.

I should have bought both the regular and 0 sugar Major Melons to compare at some point. I’ll be on the lookout for the non-sugar variation. But until then, I’m almost done with my first bottle of Mtd Dew Major Melon.

Oh, I found my first bottle at Palama Market. Yup, the Korean market stocked this ahead of (few) other stores that I had checked.

This was the first appearance of Dew that I came across after two weeks traveling the cities of Nippon. This was surely a sign of what was to come.

Back in Hawaii while stopping by a Walmart, I went a little Mountain Dew crazy after discovering five new flavors! I think the Dew-S-A flavor that combines Code Red, White Out, and Voltage has been out for a bit, but I only found a bottle today. Sweet as expected, but I think I like the original better.

First, I had to setup Apple Pay, associating my iTunes information for payment. Then I walked by the vending machine whereupon Passbook asked if I wanted to authorize a transaction using TouchID. After scanning in my fingerprint for a few seconds, the vending machine told me to make my selection. Out came my Coke Zero, and Passbook notified me of my $1.50 transaction.
Wow, just wow. Thanks to the social media push of the Surge Movement, Coca Cola is bringing back Surge for a limited time. From 1996, Surge battled Mountain Dew in the citrus soda space but eventually lost out when Surge was discontinued in the early 2000’s.

Available only from Amazon, the return of Surge was met with high demand as inventory is already wiped out. Surge is sold in twelve packs of 16-oz cans for $14. Surge does quality for Amazon Super Saver Shipping if you spend $35 or more.

Why include Surge on Pulpconnection’s 2014 Holiday Gift Guide? Family nostalgia that’s why. I’ll let you in on a little secret. In past family Christmas parties, I made the punch using Malolo’s lime syrup, ice, water, sherbert, and my secret ingredient of Surge. Forget the uncaffeinated Sprite or 7-Up. Surge was the draw. It was a perfect complement to the drink and during those times, I would have several 2-liter bottles of Surge ready to mix with. Such memories. Maybe my Surge-powered punch will make a reappearance this holiday season…

Orange Citrus and Fruit Punch Kickstart kicks off this new line starting on February 25, 2013. Each 16-ounce can serves up 92 milligrams of caffeine compared to 330 mg in a Starbucks grande coffee, and it’s only 80 calories to boot. But it’s the 5% fruit juice content that of course makes Kickstart healthier.

Mountain Dew was giving away free samples but that special was over in no time. I wonder if this idea spawned from the Mountain Dew A.M.?

That was one week ago. Today, I’ve already forgotten the flavor. Okay, I do remember one tidbit, my initial taste. On my first sip, I do remember thinking, “Whaaaaa?” as in what was Pepsi thinking combining a cola with mango. Needless to say, I’m not a fan of the Paradise Mango. I just didn’t get it. Maybe I needed to be eating some salty, spicy kim chee to complement the taste.

0 minutes: Described as “strawberry melon.” The dang cap won’t come off. Fail! Drink expiration date of June 2011. Finally got the grey cap off. Drink feels thin, like other diet Dews.

+1 minute: The strawberry taste is there, not so sure about the watermelon. Hmmm, maybe the aftertaste washes in with a hint of watermelon.

+3 minutes: Purplish, pinkish color, not too carbonated, not overly sweet. The aftertaste “feel” as with other diet sodas is definitely there.

+6 minutes: Caffeine content: 36mg/8 fl. oz. so 90mg for this 20 oz bottle. First burp.

+8 minutes: With each sip, the aftertaste flavor becomes more predominant. Think my tastebuds have gone supernova and can no longer taste the strawberry melon.

+10 minutes: Going to nurse the rest of this drink. Like any other phenomenon of nature, experiencing a supernova once is good enough.

+35 minutes: Still drinking the Supernova. Drinking sips of water, that strawberry melon taste lingers.

And yes, the Supernova flavor is not new to the Dew family. I called the non-diet Supernova a pleasant sunset back in 2008.
