While wearing a “Free Kobi” shirt, Takeru Kobayashi was arrested as he attempted to take the stage at Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest? For what and why, I don’t know.
And seriously, these competitive eating events are run by Major League Eating?! Takeru, lose the headband. It’s too classic Karate Kid Cobra Kai if you know what I mean.
Being a social media giants, I don’t have to attend very many tweetups (that’s a joke people), but I couldn’t resist Farmers Hawaii hosting a tweetup focusing on Community Engagement on the Web. This was a most delicious event!
Amuse bouche by Liliha Bakery and superb pupus made by Chef Elmer from Poke Stop were sandwiched around a delectable panel of knowledgeable guests. Daniel Leuck of TechHui, Randy Ching of Civil Beat, John Tapper of Farmers Hawaii, and Dan Zelikman of Starrtech talked about their successes and struggles using social media and the web to engage their respective communities. Each panel member had a different perspective reflective of their user base, and it was interesting to hear the similarities and differences. Holding contests, featuring members, variable subscription rates, empowered and passionate community managers were mentioned as engagement tips with the only common tip being “work hard and keep working at it.”
Ooops, how can I forget to mention Ryan Ozawa as the moderating maitre d’? He kept the topical courses paced and moving along very well!

I had thought Korean brand Sempio pulled a coup detat on the soy sauce served at Kozo Sushi. But not so fast. Kozo has re-affiliated itself with the land of the rising sun by going with Yamasa who has a history with shoyu.
So from my collection of soy sauce packets, Kozo went from Kikkoman to Sempio to Yamasa.

Location-service Foursquare is taking it to the next level, partnering with Starbucks and rewarding mayors of Starbucks. For a limited time, Foursquare mayors get a $1 discount off a Frappuccino, but the potential is intriguing. What else will Starbucks offer in the future?
And this after I lost a few Starbucks mayorships. 🙁
So Jennifer Aniston and Lady Gaga are rumored to be followers of the latest Baby Food Diet. What’s that you ask?
For the Baby Food Diet, you consume 14 jars of baby food during the day and eat a “regular” dinner. It’s that simple, and you gotta admit there might be something to this diet – already portioned, no additives, and easy to eat. One potential side effect of this diet is you might be needing some of these.
I don’t exactly know what a “re-grand opening” is, but Foodland just had one. It looked more like a small renovation with moderate changes in layout and look. There’s now an expanded organic food section and the deli/ready made food area features an olive bar and home made gelato. I think this Foodland location is gearing up to combat the coming of Whole Foods.
This year we tried the Mother’s Day brunch at Alan Wong’s Pineapple Room in Macy’s Ala Moana. Cost was $45 per adult (under 6 years old is free). Not bad at all. There were a variety of quality dishes instead of masses of “fillers.” The crowds were reasonable, and we weren’t packed into an overcrowded dining room
One small negative was the placement of the buffet food stations. Due to the small size of the restaurant, the food stations were spread out in the main dining area, the bar, the waiting area, and in the Macy’s special events room (where we were seated). So you have to walk around a bit to get your food. And you know going to buffets is all about being lazy! 😉

he desserts were fabulous and my favorite li hing tomatoes were on the menu. To top it off, Alan Wong himself visited each table, welcoming moms and their families and even taking countless group pictures. Here he is checking on some dishes.
Worth going back next year? You bet.
Blazin’ Steaks are all over Hawaii, springing up island wide. I think their unofficial motto is if steaks ain’t blazin’ within 2 miles, it’ll soon be.
A problem with this sprawling growth is finding the details of these franchises. There are at least three Blazin’ Steaks in Kailua, but none of them are listed in any phone directories. Even the mighty Google and its 411 service failed.
