March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #9: The Champ
Thanks to the Kansas Jayhawks (or coulda been, free-throw-choking Memphis Tigers), Adidas has broken Nike’s string of seven consecutive NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Here’s to the champion Jayhawks decked out with Adidas.

The Brotherhood has done it.
Here’s one last look at this year’s bracket from a kicks perspective.

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #8: The Finals
Like last year, the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion will be an easy kicks pick. The Finals are solely represented by those from the Adidas Brotherhood, the Memphis Tigers and the Kansas Jayhawks.

So Adidas finally breaks through Nike’s recent hold of National Champs dating back to 2001 (Duke, Maryland, Syracuse, UConn, NC, Florida twice). Indeed, 2008 is the year basketball is a brotherhood.

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #7: The Final Four
As March winds to a close, the Madness continues for the UCLA Bruins, Memphis Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Kansas Jayhawks. All regional #1 seeds made it to the Final Four which means that Adidas commands three spots of the Final Four with Carolina defending the Nike name ala their Team Jordan sneaks.

Though I am a little out of touch with the current kicks offerings, I don’t recall seeing any razzle dazzle out on the court this tournament. Some retro stuff but nothing that great. Maybe that’s why my bracket’s busted? 😉

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #5: Shoes of Champions
Adidas is promoting their “Basketball is a Brotherhood” advertising campaign during March Madness, and their lineup could feature a possible National Champion. Is there a champion among these?

The three stripe clad UCLA, Kansas, Memphis, and Louisville are playing on in the Elite 8.

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #6: Elite 8
The Elite 8 teams go at it on Saturday and Sunday, and we have an even split. Four Nike teams and four Adidas teams AND each regional finals feature a Nike team going up against an Adidas team. How much better can this be?
- North Carolina (Nike/Team Jordan) vs Louisville (Adidas)
- Kansas (Adidas) vs Davidson (Nike)
- Memphis (Adidas) vs Texas (Nike)
- UCLA (Adidas) vs Xavier (Nike)
In 2007, the Elite 8 was 5 for Nike and 3 for Adidas.

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #4: Sweet 16
I must say Adidas teams are making an impact on this year’s March Madness tournament. In 2007, Nike represented 11 of the Sweet 16 teams, and Adidas had the remaining five teams. There’s more parity in 2008 with nine Nike teams, six Adidas teams, and one non-sponsored team.
- North Carolina (Nike/Jordan Brand)
- Washington State (Nike)
- Louisville (Adidas)
- Tennessee (Adidas)
- Kansas (Adidas)
- Villanova (Nike)
- Wisconsin (Adidas)
- Davidson (Nike)
- Memphis (Adidas)
- Michigan State (Nike)
- Stanford (Nike)
- Texas (Nike)
- UCLA (Adidas)
- Western Kentucky (Independent)
- Xavier (Nike)
- West Virginia (Nike)

March Madness 2008 Kicks Analysis #3: First 48 Victories
After the completion of Rounds 1 and 2 of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Nike teams have 28 victories, Adidas 18, and 2 by the independent Western Kentucky. Percentage wise this equates to 58% of the wins going to Nike teams, 38% going to Adidas teams, and 4% of the games won by the non-sponsored Hilltoppers of WKU.

The 2008 results are way down for Nike. In 2006, Nike teams owned 73% of the first 48 victories and 67% in 2007. Adidas’ numbers have grown over the years, 23% in ’06, 29% in ’07, and 38% in ’08.

March Madness Kicks Analysis #2: Conference Sponsorships
Here are the conference shoe sponsorships for the 64 teams making the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
I didn’t realize the Big East led the way with the most teams (8 – 5 Nike, 3 Adidas) making the tournament. The Big 12, PAC-10, and SEC sent 6 teams each to the Tournament while the perennial powerhouse ACC only had 4 teams represented (North Carolina, Clemson, Miami, and Duke – all Nike).
March Madness Kicks Analysis #1: Shoe Sponsorship [Updated]
Did a little image searching on Getty Pictures to clear up my initial kicks analysis. Here are the new graphs.

I credited Adidas for Cal St Fullerton, but Mount Saint Mary’s popped up as another independent with Adidas and New Balance on their players. Both Nike and Adidas’ numbers went up slightly.
March Madness Kicks Analysis #1: Shoe Sponsorship
Pssst. Wanna know a secret? If your men’s basketball program is sponsored by Nike and wears Nike shoes during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, you have a good chance of winning a National Championship. Starting this century, go ask Duke (’01), Maryland (’02), Syracuse (’03), Connecticut (’04), North Carolina (’05), and Florida (’06, ’07). That’s 7 of the last 8 championships.
How does this year’s field shoe up? Let’s take a look.
Percentage of Sponsorship
Count of Sponsorship
Nike teams took a dip this year representing 60% of the dancing teams, down from 69% in 2007. My data is still flawed though with 5 unknown sponsorships (not much photo coverage of UMBC, Cornell, Miami, Saint Mary’s, and Mississippi Valley State) and needed verification on two possible independents (Cal State Fullerton and Western Kentucky). Adidas got two more teams, going from 15 to 17 teams this year. And1 and Reeboks are nowhere to be found, and Winthrop continues to be the sole rep for New Balance.
Taking a look at the shoe sponsorships by Regionals doesn’t reveal a lot.
But what is a little interesting is that the three stripped Adidas accounts for three of the four top seeded teams. UCLA, Memphis, and Kansas all ball in Adidas kicks while only the Tar Heels of North Carolina rep Nikes. Is this the year for Adidas to come through?
Other Chances for Air Jordan XX3
If you missed getting your pair of the Air Jordan XX3 this past week, don’t worry. There will be other chances coming up. Check out this white, black, and gold colorway expected on April 5.
