Apple’s WWDC on Monday
Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference kicks off on Monday at 7:00 HST. As usual, all kinds of rumors abound. It’s already been said that the new Mac OS X “Leopard” will be the main topic with betas being available for attendees. Supposedly there are “top secret” features in Leopard that Steve Jobs might be revealing during WWDC.
Could new hardware be possible? Usually WWDC is about software but you never know. A new metallic iMac is being talked about.
The iPhone is coming out later this month on Friday, June 29 so I don’t know how much emphasis this new device will get. Unless of course, Leopard has new integration features with the iPhone.
The latest rumblings for WWDC is the possible (and sensical) pairing of Apple and Google. Apple knows design (hardware and software), and Google knows stuff in the cloud aka the Internet. What happens if you couple the two? It’s already started on the iPhone where Apple built its own software interface to the Google Maps service. The AppleTV now can show videos from YouTube, another Google cloud service. Could Apple’s .Mac service get a serious overhaul with integration with other Google services? iWork could match up with Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Thinking about the possibilities are fun (especially for us .Mac subscribers)!

Roz Ho Replaced
Not sure what led up to this, but Roz Ho, the leader of the Mac Business Unit within Microsoft, has been replaced by Craig Eisler. The MacBU is the Microsoft team responsible for getting Microsoft software out there for us Mac users. You know, stuff like Office and Messenger.
Ho’s not leaving Microsoft but is joining the Entertainment and Devices Division which does the Zune and Xbox. Eisler is the so-called father of DirectX (which I never really understood especially with its non-informative name).
Why do I care? I don’t really care, but it was interesting to see an Asian female leading a “different” group within the heart of Microsoft. From videos of MacWorld events, I’ve seen Roz Ho speak about the Microsoft-Mac relationship and to me, she never really portrayed the image necessary to keep up with the old Jobs-ter. I’m sure Roz was great at her work, but flowing with el Stevo she couldn’t. She dressed metro-hip and said the right things during her presentation, but she just couldn’t pull it off.
Now this new guy Eisler might be able to pull it off. His blog shows that he’s crazy about Macs and does zany things. Wonder if he’s presenting at next week’s Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference?
Don’t Mess with ABC
If you happen to be an actor on an ABC series, one bit of advice: Don’t mess up.
Mayte “Michelle” Rodriguez. Cythina Watros. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Remember these Lost actors who messed up and subsequently were written off the series?
Now add Isaiah Washington to the list. Washington played Dr. Preston Burke on ABC’s hit Grey’s Anatomy but was just released due to previous anti-gay comments made five months ago. And oh yeah, Washington also had a good ole fashion fisticuffs with co-star Patrick Dempsey (Dr. “McDreamy” Shepherd) earlier this year.
In the Grey’s season three finale, there was doubt if Dr. Burke would return after his jilted wedding to Dr. Christina Yang. Well here’s the answer. So not only will he be gone, but Kate Walsh is starting her new show Private Practice. Gone are two powerful actors from Grey’s.

New Movies Based on Old Favorites
What’s old is new again especially in the movie biz. Some old favorites are making their appearances on the big screen in the near future.
The DC Comics youthful superhero group, the Teen Titans, will be one of them. These will be the older Titans, not the young ones featured on the Cartoon Network. Nightwing, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, Changeling… wonder if Terra will make an appearance. Deathstroke the Terminator got to be in there.
I’d have to question the decision to make the Thundercats into a full length movie. Yes, the Thundercats led by Lion-O (what creative names). You remember Panthro, Tygra, Cheetara, and everyone’s favorite Jaga. I forget their Jar Jar Binks-like sidekick’s name. Wait, found it, his name is Snarf according to the Ultimate Thundercats Webpage (thanks!).
You want a nostalgic flashback? Here you go. The beginning of the Thundercats cartoon.
All I can say is Thundercats ho!!
How Do You Do Construction in Downtown Hawaii?
Say you got to do some major construction work in Downtown Honolulu, Hawaii like removing water storage tanks from an apartment building. How do you do that with the busy streets and all the high rises around?
You get fancy and go vertical using a helicopter for airlifting.

Don’t worry, no one was harmed during this maneuver and as a precaution Alakea Street was blocked off and a bunch of lawyers were on hand ready to pounce on any mishaps.
Thanks to Pulpconnection’s legal contacts for the pics.
Starbucks Hawaii Drinks Going Layered
One more thing about Fresno, CA… this is the first place I encountered an iced “layered” caramel macchiato. Here’s a pic showing the layers of milk and espresso in a macchiato.
In Hawaii for whatever reason, we have mixed macchiatos where the milk and espresso are stirred together while the drink is made. While I prefer the taste of the mixed version, the layered version does have a certain sex appeal to it (or is it the taboo feel of white and dark intermingling?).

But just the other day when ordering a caramel macchiato at a local Starbucks, the barista asked if I wanted my drink layered or mixed. I asked when this started and was told it was a recent movement to catch up to the Mainland (is Hawaii really behind the times compared with the Armpit of Cali?).
For a temporary time, you can get a caramel macchiato mixed or layered but eventually the layered format will be the default.
An Apple Store for the Armpit of Cali
Back in February 2007, Apple posted job openings for a possible store in the Armpit of Cali aka K-Fed’s Hometown aka Fresno, CA. Four months later, there now is an Apple Store for the Armpit of Cali.
This store is located in the Fashion Fair Mall where I relived my college culinary memories, eating at Tommie’s Burgers.
Maybe I have to stop poking fun at Fresno. You know “Bad boys, bad boys” Cops films there like every episode. 😉

At Home Depot… Again
This must have been our seventh trip to Home Depot in the last two weeks. And I know we’re not done yet.
NetNewsWire 3.0 Is Out
My favorite feed aggregator/reader, NetNewsWire, has been updated to version 3.0. I’m trying to figure out the upgrade path and cost from my 2.x version. Is this a free upgrade? Hmmm, can’t seem to find any pricing info on upgrades.
New NetNewsWire purchases (with 1 year NewsGator Online Premium) are $30.
