The Real Prize of Pixar
I, Cringely has a new post about the real prize in Disney acquiring Pixar is getting Steve Jobs. Some interesting snippets:
What we have are people in power who have no muse and wouldn’t recognize one if they could even hear her. Steve Jobs knows his muse.
Against a century-old tradition of corporate bloat, Jobs successfully preaches (and proves) that smaller is really better. How else can Apple compete with Microsoft AND Dell and HP, and still have $8 billion in the bank? Because smaller is better and cheaper, too, when it comes to creative development.
I still don’t like Steve Jobs. I’ve known too many people he has hurt. But this is clearly his time, maybe even his century. And what of Bill Gates? Bill Gates is a very successful philanthropist, but he’s no Steve Jobs.
Tech Support for the Stars
Never really thought about it, but famous people need tech support just like everyone else. Read about tech support helping U2’s Bono hook up an XBox and getting Mick Jagger connected via dialup. For some reason, Best Buy’s Geek Squad seems to get all the calls.
Anyways, entertaining article.
SuperBowl XL: Extra Large for the Non-Fans
The Non-Fans gathered to watch SuperBowl XL, Seattle Seahawks versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. In true non-fan fashion, there was food, the “grid” game, crafts, napping, and some game watching.
Some common themes for the day:
- Light on the desserts. Where’s the sweets?
- Heavy on the alcohol. Moderately so, but all the drinks sold.
- Mish taking a post-meal, narcoleptic nap. What’s an event without it?
- Questioning the bathroom scale. Is that thing accurate? Yes, it is.
Five Careers in Big Demand
CNN Money has a report about 5 careers that are in big demand and therefore get big pay. The quick rundown:
- Accounting
- Sales and marketing
- Legal
- Technology (.NET developer and quality assurance analysts)
- Manufacturing and engineering
Kinda funny that in the tech career field, .NET developers are listed right alongside software quality assurance analysts. Makes me wonder about the quality of software generated by the .NET developers. So .NET developers can get paid $75-85K a year then I have to hire a software quality analyst for $65-75K a year to check the work of the .NET developer??
Club 939 VIP Lounge is Open
The second floor VIP Lounge at Club 939 is finished and features karaoke and a private stage.
The karaoke song selection must offer Wayne’s World’s booty groovin’ favorites like Super Freak and Rump Shaker. I mean how else can a VIP relax without these songs?

Marketing Shaq vs Kobe, Round 6
The 2006 NBA All-Star Game balloting is done and the starting rosters are set. Since the fans vote for the starters, it’s pretty much a popularity contest. Yao Ming was the overall top vote getter, followed by Kobe Bryant, LeBron, then Shaq.
Kobe had 2,271,631 votes to 2,192,542 for Shaq. But, looking over the highest vote getters in NBA history, Shaq is second with 2,488,089 in 2005. Kobe’s votes this year places him 5th. Also, this is Shaq’s 13th consecutive All-Star team, a rare feat only surpassed by Jerry West and Karl Malone.
Who has more marketing power as determined by NBA All-Star voting? Shaq or Kobe? It’s too close to call, and I’ll take the easy way out by calling Round 6 a draw. (Kobe 3, Shaq 2)
Round 1, Team Jersey Sales (Shaq)
Round 2, Kicks (Kobe)
Round 3a, Team Attendance (Shaq)
Round 4, Build a Bear Team Jersey (Kobe)
Round 5, The Makeup (Kobe)

Portable Apps?
Haven’t tried this yet and never had a need, but portable applications sound interesting. These standalone apps can be stored on a flash drive and launched from the flash drive without the need for installation.
The Portable Apps Suite contains Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, AbiWord (word processor), NVU (web editor), Sunbird (calendar & task list), FileZilla (FTP client), and GAIM (instant messenger).
May come in handy.

Another Apple Lawsuit?
A man is wants to sue Apple because the iPod may cause hearing loss and there are no warnings labels to warn the consumer. Apple has settled a class action suit before. I guess if McDonalds has to put warnings on the apple pie and coffee being hot, then Apple might have to warn these fools about hearing loss.
Apple did pull their iPods in France to upgrade the software to limit the sound level to 100 decibels. Currently the iPods can produce sounds above 115 decibels.
Leadership != Boss
I think I got the logic statement correct where leadership does not equal the boss. According to this article, leaders can be anywhere in your organization without any formal, official titles but still have an impact within the organization.
The reality is that 99 percent of all leadership occurs not from the top but from the middle of an organization. You can learn to develop your influence from wherever you are in the organization.
