Rookies. Every profession has a term for the uninitiated – the newbies, the interns, the freshmen. So don’t be surprised that the sorority of Sports Illustrated swimsuit models has its share of rookies. One of this year’s rookies is Hawaii-raised Michelle Vawer.
Michelle is contending for Swimsuit Rookie of the Year and represents the Aloha State. And yes, she was a swimmer for Team No Ka Oi.
You can vote for Michelle until the contest closes on March 12, 2012.
Obviously, there’s an inherent connection between professional athletes and food dishes. Get famous in a sport, get food named after you – it’s just a fact of life. Here are two recent examples. Do you recognize them (and the athlete they represent)?
The top picture is Shane Victorino’s Flyin’ Hawaiian Poke sold at Foodland. A locally born outfielder who plays for the Philadelphia Phillies translates to one damn good poke.
The bottom picture is the new special sauce for L&L’s Lin-katsu. Substituting the regular chicken katsu sauce for this special concoction that’s supposed to represent NY Knicks’ Jeremy Lin and his Asian heritage. So that means JLin is a spicy, tad creamy, orange-flavored Oriental (dressing). Um, yeah, sure… but what the heck, I bought a Lin-katsu, and I might buy one again since it’s now available at all L&L’s.

Sadly, this limited flavor is very limited, only available at the company’s Harvard Square location.
Saw this TV commercial for the Volkswagen Tiguan and love it! Didn’t know what to expect from the Riding Dirty music, the bass boomers in the trunk, and the car’s underlighting.
Would you take a cruise re-enacting the voyage of the sunken Titanic? On its 100-year anniversary of this tragedy, the cruise ship, Balmoral, will take the exact route as the fateful Titanic.
The ship will carry 1309 passengers (the same number of Titanic passengers) on an 8-night journey, and on April 14, hold a memorial at the location of the Titanic’ sinking. The on-board menu and entertainment will mirror that of 1912.
I’m sure the contemporary Titanic movie will be screened during the voyage and heck, Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On will be overplayed.
Would you take this fate-tempting trip?
Has all the hoopla around NY Knicks floor general, Jeremy Lin, gone too far? His surname poses so many possibilities to rev up the hype, but this one made me laugh.  According to Tannya Joaquin, local plate lunch chain, L & L, has introduced the Lin-katsu.  That’s chicken katsu with a special sauce that’s more spicy with mayo to reflect JLin’s Taiwanese heritage.
But if you want to sample the Linkatsu, it’s only available at the Keeaumoku, Airport, Kahala locations.
And look, dining on Lin-katsu wouldn’t be complete without wearing a Lin-katsu shirt!
The memes never stop on the Internet. The latest craze is to “brady” as in assume the dejected position of Patriots QB Tom Brady after throwing an interception during Superbowl 46.
I often assume this pose but slightly differently. Place a chair under me, stick me in a meeting, or at my desk, reviewing document after document, and you’ll see me bradying.
