Thomas Fargo on Leadership

As former head of the Pacific Command, our one-time boss, Thomas Fargo, had this to say about leadership in the Advertiser’s Leadership Corner column:

People think that in the military you just bark out orders and they’re followed. But fundamentally it doesn’t matter what organization you’re in, people need to understand the compelling logic of your decision. As long as you’ve articulated the mission clearly, people will go to heroic levels to make it come out right.

I guess that memo didn’t make its way around the staff.

Wasting Time at Work

Salary.com did a survey that looks at how employees waste time at work. Okay, okay, I admit that I’ve done all the things listed in the Top Time-Wasting Activities including #4 Spacing Out. But the entire state of Hawaii is in the #3 spot for not wasting time so it’s all good. Check out the survey results.

Fruity Chocolatey Goodness Comes to Hawaii

Happened to be at Safeway in Hawaii Kai looking for this year’s Slam Kicks issue when I saw a bottle of fruity chocolatey goodness, Coffee-mate’s Chocolate Raspberry creamer. It’s finally reached Hawaii. On past years trips to Cali, I’ve been guzzling this stuff down. It’s yummy! Yes, I’ve even had this stuff imported on a few occasions.

Don’t know why it took so long to come to Hawaii. Maybe rapper Kanye West had some choice words for Nestle. Or maybe the rich, white folks in Hawaii Kai complained enough? It don’t matter, you just got to give it a try.

Wayne’s World, this is why you leave space for cream in your cup of joe.

Tangent #1: the Hawaii Kai Safeway is nice, very nice compared to other Safeways I’ve been to. Kind of a rustic decor.

Tangent #2: this Safeway still suffered from a shortage of the purple carton Lactaid milk. It ain’t just Kailua.

Microsoft to Open a Retail Store in NY?

Microsoft may be opening its own store in Times Square, NY according to this report. Don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be drawn to it. Other than their upcoming XBox 2, Microsoft doesn’t make any cool stuff. Checking out the latest version of Office ain’t that exciting you know. If they had a Genius Bar like those in the Apple Stores, they’d be swamped by folks wanting to know how to remove the latest rash of viruses and spyware.

Rory Wild Back with the Wakeup Crew

Thanks goodness Rory Wild is back on the air leading the i-94 Wakeup Crew. Sorry Gregg Hammer, Krey-Z Oshiro, and now Natasha, but without Rory, your show is just mediocre. When Rory is around, timing is smooth, and the show runs well. Gregg is funny, but he ain’t the lead for a show. His comedic commentary follows Rory’s lead. Don’t get me started when Jr. K. Jr. is on the show. I immediately change to another station or listen to my iPod when he’s guest hosting.

On the medical front, there’s a new study saying coffee (in moderation) has some healthy benefits.
