Some Pics from the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail
Some scenic shots taken on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail can be seen at my MobileMe gallery. Sorry, no pictures of meeting Tannya Joaquin.

Long time Hawaiian music legend, Robert Cazimero, was at Kenny’s Restaurant at the Kamehameha Shopping Center the other day. Almost didn’t recognize him without his signature bandanna look, but I’m pretty sure that was him.
I didn’t get a picture as he was exiting the eatery, but this is the chair where Robert Cazimero sat (and that’s not him sitting in the chair in the pic).
And just for fun, here’s a picture of my daily special, teri beef king sandwich.
Our annual holiday dinner brought the usual laughs and eats. This was the first time any of us tried out the buffet at Kai Market in the Sheraton Waikiki , and um, yeah, I don’t think I’ll be going back. Nothing wrong per se, but nothing right for $49 per adult. The desserts were the best part, featuring a few worthy creations from Satura Cakes.
The hottest grab bag gifts this year were a Nerf toy gun and a Starbucks tumbler that looked like a regular iced drink cup. That Snuggie got some looks though.
Just realized that President Barack Obama in Hawaii and hiking the Makapuu Lighthouse trail have been recent family traditions during December.
In December 2008, that Oahu-wide power outage precipitated the Lighthouse hike, and Mr. Obama was on the Windward side greeting people.
Better schedule these traditions for 2010 but skipping that blackout part.
That voice. It came out of nowhere atop the Makapuu Lighthouse trail. The voice asking if I wanted a picture taken of the entire family with me, the photographer, in it. The voice telling her own personal stories of family members missing from pictures serving duty behind the camera.
Nah, no thanks was my simple reply to that voice, not wanting a picture of weary kids unamused by the glaring sun.
Then it registered, that voice. Sounded familiar, but from where? Visually, it’s amazing what a mask a pair of sunglasses can be.
Nah, couldn’t be… Or could it? Was that the voice of Tannya Joaquin from Hawaii News Now?
Are you Tannya? Yes, that voice was that of Tannya Joaquin.
Sorry, no picture to show. I was tempted to ask for a pic, but it was family time for both parties. Me with mine and Tannya with hers during the Holidays. No time for local celebrity fanfare. All in all though, this simple gesture from parent to parent for the sake of family reminds me why I trust the people of KGMB9 (now Hawaii News Now).
Update: Tannya also blogged about this random encounter on her Hawaii News Now blog, Ad-Lib.
What can President Barack Obama do in Hawaii as he and his family takes some time off to recharge on the Windward side of Oahu? Let’s see…
1. Relax with time off. Since the President is going to be resting and relaxing while in Hawaii, it’s only fair that his faithful civil servants do the same. How about showing Federal employees some love and giving them time off this Holiday season? Oh snap, he already did!
2. Get a shave ice fix. Even though it’s a little chilly for Hawaii standards, the Commander in Chief can partake of shave ice whenever he wants. Just as a Force Protection issue, however, I recommend changing up his routine and going somewhere other than Island Snow for a shave ice fix. How about the traveling shave ice van, Tats? Heck, Tats could even drive to the President’s Kailua location.
3. Bodyboard with peace. The last time Barack Obama vacationed in Hawaii, he bodysurfed at Sandy’s. Why not go back and see if he still got it? He might need a handboard to help catch a wave and of course, the President can’t use a brown McDonald’s tray. He needs something cooler. How about a large replica of his Nobel Peace Prize? That would be killer!
4. Petition for an appearance on LOST. Even though LOST production is over for the holidays, I’m sure the Prez can contact the right people. He’d be a fan favorite with a cameo on the final season of this hit series.
5. Check out local technology advances. Did you know it now snows in Windward Mall? If that’s not a technological advancement then I don’t know what is.
6. Reminisce at Windward Mall. The Paina Koolau Food Court is now open and over the decades, there have been so many changes. President Obama should take a stroll through the Mall and reminisce the original tenants like JC Penneys, Marie Callender’s, and the other forgottens.
7. Golf with high school rivals. I don’t know if Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann golfs, but maybe this Iolani grad can go for a round of golf against the Punahou alum. But then again, the President could enlist the help of another fellow Buffanblu who happens to be in town.
8. Provide strategic advice. With the inevitable Froyo Wars looming, the President could administer strategic advice to the participants on how to win this war.
9. Light-seeing in Kaneohe. The Nation’s Capital is surely decorated for Christmas, but can it beat Namoku Street in Kaneohe? This neighborhood goes all out each year with its Christmas lights and decorations. Santa’s even there passing out candy canes… but only if you’re on his Nice list.
10. Eat at Kin Wah Chop Suey. With all these activities, the President and his family will be hungry. To demonstrate frugal restraint in this austere economy, the President should forgo the lavishness of Alan Wong’s, Mariposa, and the Kahala Resort.
Affordable, good food can be found at Kin Wah Chop Suey in Kaneohe. I recommend the minute chicken cake noodle, and for his on-island friends, why not visit with Kin Wah gift certificates in hand? Yes, President Obama can emblazon the Presidential seal to the gift certificates.
There you go, Pulpconnection’s top things President Obama can do on his Hawaiian vacation. What are your Windward-side recommendations for President Obama and his family?
Christmas is right around the corner, and if you’re still looking for an awesome gift, look no further than Kin Wah. Their gift certificates are a perfect gift for great, affordable food. Just look at this minute chicken cake noodle. What a yummy gift!
You can even pick up gift cards on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! No expiration dates for these gift certificates too.
Have you visited the Office Max Waikele location recently? Maybe it’s just my active imagination at work, or is there some kind of hijinks going on at this location?
I got a bad vibe when I was there the other week. Most of the employees are local looking, but the management guys are not. They’re definitely not from Hawaii and really stick out. Maybe this is just part of Office Max’s management training program, moving managers to various locations. But these “outsider” managers seemed especially suspicious keen of things going on.
What kind of things were going on? Probably nothing and just coincidental but… employees at a register talking amongst each other then as customers came up to check out, the register “mysteriously” rebooted. Then there’s the same employees handing other employees Office Max gift cards. And then there’s my “new” membership to Office Max Perks which mysteriously has a purchase registered on it. While I won’t dispute a $12 credit on this account, why does a supposedly new account have transactions already on it.
From a recent purchase and membership to Office Max Perks, I’m supposed to get a $50 credit. Now I wonder about that.
Anyone else get bad vibes from Office Max Waikele?
Couldn’t finish the hamburger steak plate with kim chee fried rice from Big City Diner.
Although dessert did follow… 🙂
