March Madness 2011 Kicks Analysis: Shoe Sponsorship
Has it been 3 years since I’ve done one of these? Really? That long? So there’s no time to waste. Everyone knows that a team’s success during March Madness is heavily influenced by their kicks aka sneakers. Wear the wrong brand, and your chances of cutting down the victory net will be slim.
What’s the shoe-scape for 2011 look like? It’s full of swooshes with at least 73% of the teams branded by Nike. Upstart Under Armour is in the game represented by Temple, and Adidas rounds out the dance card with 17% of the teams. I still have 5 unidentified teams to research. They are Indiana St., Long Island, Northern Colorado, St. Peter’s, and Akron.
After the first round games, I’ll fix the kicks analysis.
Regulators, Mount Up
Rest in peace, Nate Dogg of Regulate fame.

The Decorative Kamehameha Highway?
Driving along Kamehameha Highway in Aiea and Pearl City, I witnessed the awesome decorative display lining the chain link fence that runs the entire median of the road.
The pattern changes every few hundred feet, and I’m sure this does help reduce the headlights of opposing vehicles. But all I can say is, “Wow.” I’m not sure if that’s a Wow! or a Wow?!?
Gotta Be the Shoes

I thought the WAC Tournament would have been a good debut for these. But after UH’s first round WAC loss, what’s not to lose showcasing the bright greens in the Bows CIT postseason? Go Bows!
Awesomeness by Seth Godin
Thanks to mirthlab for pointing out this video interview with Seth Godin. It’s pure awesomeness.
Exclusive interview with Seth Godin from GiANT Impact on Vimeo.
If you’ve read Seth’s works like The Dip, Tribes, and Linchpin, you’ll hear similar concepts, but this is a concise, seven-minute narrative full of Seth’s passions.
And Seth has a new book Poke the Box that came out this month.
New Muffins at Costco!
It’s been some time since Costco changed up its selection of muffins. For awhile I thought those days were done, but look, there are new flavors! Vanilla Chocolate and French Toast (not pictured).
Probably a limited time thing so best to get your muffin action on soon.
Riding Off Into the Zune-set
Hold on to that Microsoft Zune since you might just have a collector’s item on your hands. Microsoft will stop introducing new Zunes, though they may try again with a new device.
Quick Review: Starbucks Iced Cocoa Cappuccino
So I loved the refined taste of Starbucks’ new Cocoa Cappuccino as a hot beverage. How about the iced version? Sadly disappointing.
The drink looks luscious in the new siren logo-ed cup then my perception changed once I took a sip. The iced version tastes decomposed without any harmony. I guess that’s expected from the makeup of the drink. Take freshly drawn espresso and infused it with melted mocha. Then steam milk for the froth. Now take all these hot components, stick it in a plastic cup, and dump ice cubes in for a fast chill. Yeah, no wonder there’s no harmony.
For the iced version, I’d stick with a regular old Iced Mocha but as a hot beverage, the Cocoa Cappuccino is definitely worthy.
Remembering March 10
Just some notes remembering the night of March 10, 2011. Nothing exciting and nothing you haven’t already heard or experienced.
About 8:30pm, fired up Twitter and started reading tweets about a possible tsunami?! Followed the #HItsunami tag to catch up and learned of the huge earthquake (and aftershocks) that devastated Japan. Turned on the television news to learn more.

About 9:00pm, decided to go to the market to buy some supplies and also get some gas. The line at the nearby gas station was way too long so I turned around and headed to the market instead. The Safeway parking lot was bristling with activity. Inside was strangely calm until I noticed that everyone was in line at the checkout registers. Only thing is, the only two manned registers were closed, and the self checkout stations were shut down.
Two lines had formed, each winding its way along the side then back of the store. I was going to head out empty handed, but we kinda needed a few things and who knew what things would be like the next day. I tried making calls home, but I couldn’t get through on AT&T. So I got my stuff, stood in line, and waited.

Luckily, data via 3G was working, albeit a little delayed. So email, Twitter, and Facebook kept me informed of the latest happenings including AT&T voice services being overwhelmed. The checkout lines finally started to move as more Safeway workers arrived. And these workers deserve credit for coming in under these unknown circumstances and also for working quickly, whittling down the enormous lines in a few minutes.
Finally got home about 10:00pm (but I had given up on getting gas). Watched more news about the earthquake and a possible tsunami. As the hours went by and the tsunami watch turned into a tsunami warning, I started charging batteries, phones, and other devices. Around midnight, I decided to get some sleep before the estimated tsunami arrival at 3am.
At 2-something, my alarms and the emergency sirens woke me up. There weren’t any more definitive specifics so I waited. And waited and waited. You know the rest of Oahu’s tsunami (non) story. Although I do admit that from all previous natural disaster close calls for Hawaii, I thought we were due. This had to be it, but fortunately it wasn’t.
For Japan, each day brings seemingly new challenges, and for me, it’s totally unimaginable – the earthquakes, the flooding, possible radiation leaks, the chaos. My thoughts go out to the people of Japan and their long road ahead.
