What’s with Anna Miller Pie Tins?

Anyone know anything about the pie tins from Anna Millers? This is the only place I know of where you need to place a deposit on the tins in addition to the cost of a pie.

If you bring back used tins, you get a partial refund. Wonder what’s so special about the tins? Yeah, they’re stronger and sturdier than the ones you get with sweet bread but still. I’ve never come across another bakery that does something like this.

Can anyone shed light on this age old mystery?

The former Miss Hawaii is now a member of KHON2’s dwindling reporting staff, and her first assignment was to go out there and cover an impending natural disaster. How’s that for an initiation?

I’m guessing KHON is making a run for Pulpconnection’s next Hottest Local Newscasters poll. And with this new responsibility, that explains why she won’t be hosting Club 939’s Two Year Anniversary Party.

Club 939 Is Turning Two!

Club 939, Hawaii’s adult hotspot, is turning two years old this month. What makes Club 939 so special?

Could it be its sizzling themed events? Is it the bumping music they play? Is it the food? How about their tee shirts? Maybe their decor is simply mesmerizing? Is it because 939 got an on-line following? Could it be their newspaper advertisements? Maybe it’s the fact that the 939 employees have annual company retreats? What does make the celebs stop on by and make patrons want to become 939 VIPs? Why did LOST choose to film inside the Club? (Did you miss that episode? Screen grabs here)

Maybe it’s because of the girls of 939. Go find out yourself as Club 939 celebrates its second year anniversary from August 16-18, hosted by Miss Candy.

NOAA Shafts Mac Users During a Tsunami?

NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, announced the availability of a new online tool showing Hawaii’s tsunami evacuation zones. With this tool, you can search for your address to check if you’re in a flooding zone and also get preparedness information should a tsunami occur.

The Tsunami Hazard Information Service sounds like a great step for public safety… unless you’re a Mac user. Did you see the small caption at the bottom of the graphic depicting the NOAA website in the Honolulu Advertiser article? It says:

Note: Apple and Mac users may have difficulty accessing the information.

Hey, what’s with that? A cool new public safety tool that doesn’t work for a segment of the on-line community, namely Mac users? What kind of design is that? Sounds a little reckless if you ask me.

Or, the actual problem could be Google’s. The Tsunami Hazard Information Service uses Google Maps fused with NOAA data to create the maps of evacuation zones. And despite Apple and Google’s partnership, Safari does have some compatibility problems with Google Maps.

Wonder if Squirrel Boy’s (Google CEO Eric Schmidt) visit to Steve Jobs at Apple was to address this glaring disservice to public safety?

50 Cent Versus Kanye West

Nothing like throwing down a good ole’ fashion challenge! Both 50 Cent and Kanye West are set to release their individual newest works on September 11, 2007, but 50 is sure his album will garner more sales.

50’s Curtis is going up against Kanye’s Graduation, and 50 has said he’ll quit his solo music career if Graduation outsells Curtis.

Looking at my iTunes library, I have 25 songs featuring 50 Cent and 34 songs from Kanye. And I have Kanye’s Graduation on pre-order. While I like a few of 50’s songs here and there, track for track I think Kanye has better material. Probably can’t go wrong with either one.

I Have a Weak Mind

I admit that I have a weak mind and can easily be influenced by television advertisements. After watching guest judge Rocco DiSpirito peddle Bertolli frozen dinners in Top Chef Episode 6: Freezer Burn, I succumbed and bought the Italian Sausage and Rigatoni (on sale at Don Quijote this week).

The promise of these Bertolli meals is a pasta dish for two after 10 minutes of cooking. You empty the bag into a skillet, and let the magic begin.

My own top chef added some mushrooms, and the meal delivered as promised. Enough for two, 10 minutes of cooking, and it tasted pretty good. Salty but tasty. This would make a good meal for those single, young (minded), partying, strip club owning guys out there!

Well, Kiss Tre’s Grits!

,

Don’t just call him Ladies Love Cool Tre yet, but the judges of Top Chef loved Tre’s work on Episode 7: Guilty Pleasures. Tre’s contribution to Team Black was the bacon wrapped shrimp with grilled corn and white cheddar cheese grits. That and showing off his guns while cooking in the kitchen.

On the chopping block on Team Orange was Sara N, the 25-year old chef that got slammed by Howie. I thought Howie’s time was up since he’s causing so much turmoil for the entire crew, but he survived for another week. Head Judge Tom Colicchio explained it best when he made a comment about being the best match for this competition. And since being the Top Chef not only means being able to cook, but being able to manage and handle the entire kitchen, Howie’s demeanor unfortunately is a better match than Sara’s.

Yeah, I think Sara’s youth and having less experience due to her young age was a disadvantage. The older, seasoned chefs didn’t let things bother them so much and got their heads back in the game faster.

iTunes Went Widgets

iTunes finally succumb and joined the widget revolution. Introducing the My iTunes service that simply shows your iTunes favorites, purchases, or reviews on your web site or blog.

It’s pretty simple. You first need to enable My iTunes within the iTunes software by agreeing to Apple’s privacy statement. Once activated, you customize your widget, get the HTML code, and insert it into your site like so.

I’ll add a smaller version to my sidebar and clutter it up for a little while anyway.

Who’s in Worse Shape, Britney or Lindsay?

Who do you think is in worse shape, Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan?

Both been in trouble recently with the latest of Britney getting filmed and photographed doing a “Toyota service” to another parked car. Wasn’t it just yesterday that US magazine reported about Brit’s truth or dare pool party with a bunch of college kids?

So who do you think is in worse shape, Britney or Lindsay?

Work as a Google Business Referral Representative

May have to give this some thought since I do this to some degree already, but Google will pay you to visit local stores, get vital info and pics, and submit them to Google for inclusion in Google Maps.

There’s more to it than that and you have to sign up and be approved to participate in the program, but you can get $10 per submitted store. Read the entire Business Referral Representative FAQ for the details.

I was there at the opening of Satura Cakes at Ward and helped them adjust their sign for their hours of operation. Got coverage of La Palme Dor Patisserie at Ala Moana, was there at the opening of Ben & Jerry’s at Ward. Of course, I could submit entries for Kin Wah Chop Suey, Elements Hawaii, and Club 939.

Dang I Need an iPhone!

Or how I missed getting a picture of Jorge Garcia who plays Hurley on LOST. an atypical grocery shopping trip, lo and behold there’s none other than Hurley at our nearby non-lifestyled Safeway. He was shopping around the deli section and looked just like he does on the show.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera with me. 🙁 I always joke with my wife that I carry my camera around just in case I run into actors from LOST, but this time, I wasn’t prepared. 🙁 If I had an iPhone, I would had pics!

And by the way, Angry Asian Girl would be proud of his vehicle selection. Very darkly tinted windows though.

So my LOST sightings include Sawyer, Desmond, and now Hurley.
