Restaurants’ Secret Menus

Here’s a compiled list of secret menus at other restaurants.
Can the Tabasco Man finish off a 100×100 at In-N-Out?
Faltering iPod?
My first generation iPod Shuffle that I got free for buying a bunch of Dockers pants is giving me more and more problems. First, it would stop playing for no apparent reason. The other day, after doing a sync, only 2 songs were available even though iTunes showed 16 songs.
I tried another sync and iTunes said the media was uninitialized, and there were no songs on the iPod. I then downloaded the iPod shuffle Reset Utility from Apple and gave that a shot. This utility wipes out a Shuffle, returning it to clean state with the latest firmware.
At first, the tool did not recognize my Shuffle. Scary. I waited a few minutes and tried again. This time, it saw my Shuffle and successfully reset it. I transfered songs to my reset Shuffle, and everything seems to be working okay so far.
Any other first gen Shuffle users having issues with their iPods? Is it time for an upgrade?
Hello iPhone!
I passed on watching the Oscars tonight, but I had heard Apple was going to air an iPhone commercial during the six hour marathon. Here’s a copy of the iPhone commercial debut (in HD no less) from UNEASYsilence.
Picked Up New Running Shoes at 70% Off
At today’s Macy’s sale, I picked up a pair of running shoes, the Nike Shox Turb Oh+. Normally, these shoes go for $100 but they were on the clearance rack for $75. The sale also took off 50% on clearance items and we had a 20% additional savings card!

In all, this $100 pair of shoes cost about $30. And these are the Nike+ shoes that are ready for the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit.
The Hypocrisy of LeBron James’ Blog on MSN Live
I read that NBA star LeBron James started his own web site and blog in cooperation with Microsoft (boo!) so I had to check it out after hearing about its launch. What do you see when you visit lebron.msn.com? You get a nicely animated Flash-based site of pure confusion!

Okay, okay, I’m not the target demographic of kids and teens so I may be missing something. First off, from a usability standpoint, I don’t know what I’m supposed to click on. Instead I wave my cursor around the screen waiting to see where it changes to a clickable finger. Humbug, although if you’re a youngster, you may not mind rummaging around and discovering what’s clickable.
The left (and right) arrows take you to different locations on LeBron’s site starting with the Athlete then to the History, the Icon, and finally the Challenge.
On the main Athlete page, there’s a sign to “check out the latest stuff on my BLOG!!!” so I click on the sign which takes me to the LeBron on MSN blog which is powered by Windows Live. What’s on this blog? Two entries. Two. One, two. This is better than the single blog entry launch of the Honolulu Advertisers’ Lost blog, but come on now. Launch a blog without any content? Who’s great idea was this?

What else is on this blog? There’s a Custom List section which is empty. There’s a book list which is empty, there’s a section for friends which is empty, but there are about 20 photos available.
And my biggest disappointment with this blog? It’s not written by King James himself. This LeBron on MSN blog is managed by a professional journalist named Emil Wilbekin. As a journalist, the entries are well written, but I was thinking I’d find authentic thoughts from LeBron on this blog, not the reporting of a professional. To make matters worse, look at this hypocrisy of the concept of this blog:
I ask him why he chose the Internet and an online website as a way to communicate with his fans, share himself with the world, and use this as a vehicle to inspire. LBJ’s answer is this:
It’s kinda of self explanatory. The world to today is based online. There’s a lot of kids out there who spend more time online than they do sleeping. You get an opportunity to get online and talk to kids and talk to grown-ups. Technology is taking over more than anything. It’s not TV as much anymore, it’s not radio as much anymore, it’s online. That’s my thinking.
LeBron, if that’s your thinking then why didn’t YOU write that in YOUR blog, your link to the online world you talk about? You’re a busy guy being an NBA superstar, I get that, but your message would be more meaningful and true coming from you. Many comments left on the blog are written to you and the public wants to know more about you, so why not make this your blog and not a Microsoft marketing machine?

Can’t Win a Free Starbucks Tee?
If you’re having a tough time like me winning a free customized Starbucks tee shirt, you do have the option of bidding for shirts designed for celebrities. Through the Clothes Off Our Back auctions, movie stars are auctioning off their Starbucks shirts for charity.
So if you can’t win a shirt by the end of this month, you can bid $100 for Jessica Biel’s women’s small shirt or $160 for Heroes’ Masi Oka XL. Several Lost actors are also participating in the auction.
Liking These Air Force Ones
I’m liking these to-be-released Air Force Ones.

The orange, red, and white colors are easier said than done.
Ice Cream at Farrell’s
Went to eat at the re-opened Farrell’s at Windward Mall, not once, but twice in the recent weeks. The inside is pretty small, and it doesn’t seat that many people. There’s a side room for large parties and a small area where you can buy toys and knickknacks.
The food is your standard fair, but don’t get the teri chicken sandwich. It’s a waste of time with teri sauce covering a regular chicken fillet.
The main reason why you go to Farrell’s is, of course, for the ice cream. A banana split please!
How about a 30-scoop Mauna Kea Fudge Volcano? I think that’s a one-man job for the Tabasco Man.

Get the Shoulder Surgery, Dwyane Wade
Just found out that Dwyane Wade’s shoulder injury is indeed a dislocation. That’s not good for the Heat’s playoff chances, and it’s especially not good for the young DWade. The injury will take a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks just to heal, but it ain’t going to feel normal for a while after that. Play basketball at a professional level? That’ll probably take months for a good recovery. He could take a chance and come back early, but his shoulder will most likely pop out again before the season is done. Is that re-injury worth it? I still remember how a shoulder dislocation sidetracked the senior year of UH guard AC Carter. While he played out the year, he was never the same dominating player after the injury. And during the NBA tryouts, another dislocation sidelined AC and forced a surgery.
For Dwyane Wade, knowing he has several years in his professional career, I would undergo surgery right away and sit out the rest of the season. This season is done. The Heat have a marginal chance of making the playoffs now that Shaq is back, but they have a tough road ahead. I’m thinking a healthy DWade (and hopefully Shaq) for the next season is a better bet.
A shoulder dislocation is a big deal, and I’ve had a dislocation/subluxation seven times now. In the 90’s, I pretty much dislocated my shoulder once a year, mostly playing basketball. The road to recovery is a long one starting with weeks of wearing a sling and not being able to use your entire arm. Ordinary tasks become troublesome. Sleeping is uncomfortable and even the basics like showering and combing your hair is a challenge. Even when you can take the sling off, your arm is weak and immobile. There’s physical therapy and rehab exercises to get mobility and range of motion back. Eventually weight training is possible to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder joint. But still, the shoulder is never the same.
I think it would be about 3 months after the injury that I felt able to go out on the court again, and even then, I’d be real cautious when playing. The fear of reinjury forces a change in playing style. Go in for a rebound? Forget about it. Instead of mixing it up down low, you stay on the outside.
Surgery and rehab for a professional athlete is commonplace, and you hear about players with successful careers after surgeries, so I think Dwyane should go this route now and be done with it. Granted, I don’t have the luxury of top notch medical services, but I never opted for surgery and kept getting reinjured year after year. Finally the old medical adage of “it hurts when I do this, so don’t do that” sunk in making me reconsider the worth of playing basketball versus getting injured.
Dwyane, get the surgery done and get healthy so that you can keep playing your aggressive style next year.
