Learning a Lot About WordPress

There sure is a lot to learn about the popular blogging software WordPress. Running your own WP server is easy but also not so easy. There’s so much you can (and should) customize that the learning curve becomes real steep real fast.

I finally learned about widgets which is already installed on WordPress.com. Using widgets really simplifies the basic stuff you typically find in the sidebar. But now there’s so many widgets to choose from!

And the themes… so, so many to get the right look.

All this learning is slowly making its way into this site which is far from done. I’m not anywhere close to implementing the great ideas I received. So much to learn and so much to do!

Music Via YouTube

I had read about getting music (and music videos) from YouTube before, primarily from a funny post on Mark Cuban’s Blog Maverick. Never looked into it until now…

Even though I didn’t luck out and did not get an Xbox 360 for $100, I’ve seen commercials for some of the 360 games and one stood out, the Gears of War. I really like the commercial, especially the music. Here’s the television trailer.

In fact, I liked the music so much, I figured I’d try out some techniques Mark Cuban described and get the music from the Gears of War commercial on YouTube. I used KeepVid.com to download the Flash video (.FLV) file to my computer. Now I had to convert the video .FLV file to another format. I used iSquint for that job. iSquint can convert video to many different formats including .FLV files. After a few minutes the audio (and video) were converted to an MP4 format compatible with iTunes. Worked well, but because YouTube goes for speed, not necessarily quality, the audio and video could have been better.

Doing a bit more research, I came across TubeSock. This app does everything I described above in one step for the user. You provide the YouTube link then TubeSock downloads and converts the video automatically. And it can strip out the video, saving the audio only portion as an MP3. Only thing is TubeSock costs $15.

My original goal was to get the song from the Gears of War commercial. And I did, thanks to YouTube, but not exactly how I detailed above. Everything did work, but while reading the comments on the YouTube Gears of War trailer, people talked about the music. It’s called Mad World, and many artists sing different versions. This particular version is performed by Gary Jules or Michael Andrews. In either case, it’s available on the Donnie Darko soundtrack which is available in the iTunes Store in its high quality quality glory. So instead, I spent $1 to own Mad World.

No Xbox 360 for $100 for Me

For the heck of it, I tried getting one of those Xbox 360 systems for $100 at Amazon. At about 4 minutes until the start of the sale, refreshing Amazon became real slow. Must have taken about 30-60 seconds. The next refresh took even longer. After one more refresh, I got this screen saying they already sold out.


Did anyone luck out and get one of these deals?

Countdown to Ten Thousand: We Have a Winner!

The Countdown to Ten Thousand hits is now over, and we have a winner. And I can’t believe it. He called it, and he did it. Pulpconnection reader “-s” is the winner being the 10,001 visitor.

The 10,002 visitor was some loser person from Mililani who got beat out by 35 seconds.

Search Query: "Is Bobby G’s a gay bar?"

I can feel the search queries going already. Gregg Pitts, the director of the White House Travel Office, was mugged while exiting Bobby G’s in the International Marketplace last night at about 2 in the morning. A very unfortunate incident for Hawaii and its tourist reputation.

Since the incident, I’m thinking the Net has been filled with search queries asking, “Is Bobby G’s a gay bar?” Unfortunate but probably true.

Update: Uh oh, there actually is a blog called Bobby G’s Blog and here’s the first line of the About Me section:

I’m an obnoxious, opinionated, homosexual Jew.

I hope this guy has Google Adsense setup cause I think he’ll be getting a lot of hits!

Google Stock $500!!

Whoa, Google’s stock is now valued at over $500 a share. Most impressive.

If you haven’t tried out any of Google’s other services, take a look to see where the future is headed. A coworker and I played around with Google Docs to check out its simultaneous editing feature. It was way cool and made us wonder why this wasn’t done before. What’s impressive about Google is that their products aim to redefine the game rather than simply improving the existing one. A web-based word processor? Not good enough. Add in simultaneous editing and RSS notifications of updates. Neato.

Battlestar Galactica Moving to Sunday Nights?

The popular Sci-Fi hit, Battlestar Galactica, may be moving to Sunday nights from its Friday night spot.

BSG is a solid show that surprisingly isn’t focused on science fiction. Most of the issues deal with humanity and morality. Go figure from a show where robotic Cylons are involved. If you want to catch up with the BSG storylines, be sure to get the free The Story So Far video from iTunes.

At Pulpconnection, it’s all about the love. All kinds of love, yes, including the man love (Pulpconnection is progressive). And with Global Orgasm Day coming up on December 22, here’s a contribution to get you in the mood.
