Tech Support for the Stars
Never really thought about it, but famous people need tech support just like everyone else. Read about tech support helping U2’s Bono hook up an XBox and getting Mick Jagger connected via dialup. For some reason, Best Buy’s Geek Squad seems to get all the calls.
Anyways, entertaining article.
SuperBowl XL: Extra Large for the Non-Fans
The Non-Fans gathered to watch SuperBowl XL, Seattle Seahawks versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. In true non-fan fashion, there was food, the “grid” game, crafts, napping, and some game watching.
Some common themes for the day:
- Light on the desserts. Where’s the sweets?
- Heavy on the alcohol. Moderately so, but all the drinks sold.
- Mish taking a post-meal, narcoleptic nap. What’s an event without it?
- Questioning the bathroom scale. Is that thing accurate? Yes, it is.
Five Careers in Big Demand
CNN Money has a report about 5 careers that are in big demand and therefore get big pay. The quick rundown:
- Accounting
- Sales and marketing
- Legal
- Technology (.NET developer and quality assurance analysts)
- Manufacturing and engineering
Kinda funny that in the tech career field, .NET developers are listed right alongside software quality assurance analysts. Makes me wonder about the quality of software generated by the .NET developers. So .NET developers can get paid $75-85K a year then I have to hire a software quality analyst for $65-75K a year to check the work of the .NET developer??
Marketing Shaq vs Kobe, Round 6
The 2006 NBA All-Star Game balloting is done and the starting rosters are set. Since the fans vote for the starters, it’s pretty much a popularity contest. Yao Ming was the overall top vote getter, followed by Kobe Bryant, LeBron, then Shaq.
Kobe had 2,271,631 votes to 2,192,542 for Shaq. But, looking over the highest vote getters in NBA history, Shaq is second with 2,488,089 in 2005. Kobe’s votes this year places him 5th. Also, this is Shaq’s 13th consecutive All-Star team, a rare feat only surpassed by Jerry West and Karl Malone.
Who has more marketing power as determined by NBA All-Star voting? Shaq or Kobe? It’s too close to call, and I’ll take the easy way out by calling Round 6 a draw. (Kobe 3, Shaq 2)
Round 1, Team Jersey Sales (Shaq)
Round 2, Kicks (Kobe)
Round 3a, Team Attendance (Shaq)
Round 4, Build a Bear Team Jersey (Kobe)
Round 5, The Makeup (Kobe)

Portable Apps?
Haven’t tried this yet and never had a need, but portable applications sound interesting. These standalone apps can be stored on a flash drive and launched from the flash drive without the need for installation.
The Portable Apps Suite contains Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, AbiWord (word processor), NVU (web editor), Sunbird (calendar & task list), FileZilla (FTP client), and GAIM (instant messenger).
May come in handy.
Technical Trivia (and a Shout Out)
Some technical trivia questions.
How many engineers does it take to move 3 pallets of servers?
Two, cause you know kazuo kicks kobe.
What is 00-a0-21?
The Ethernet MAC address registered to General Dynamics.
How many people does it take to troubleshoot a faulty network?
Six or just one if you got skills.
How long does it take to troubleshoot a faulty network?
More than six months or in about three hours if you one smart dude.
It’s really amazing what one really smart guy with skills can accomplish. Six people troubleshooting for over six months or one guy providing solutions in three hours. No comparison. You know and I know – Sid rocks!
Another Apple Lawsuit?
A man is wants to sue Apple because the iPod may cause hearing loss and there are no warnings labels to warn the consumer. Apple has settled a class action suit before. I guess if McDonalds has to put warnings on the apple pie and coffee being hot, then Apple might have to warn these fools about hearing loss.
Apple did pull their iPods in France to upgrade the software to limit the sound level to 100 decibels. Currently the iPods can produce sounds above 115 decibels.
Leadership != Boss
I think I got the logic statement correct where leadership does not equal the boss. According to this article, leaders can be anywhere in your organization without any formal, official titles but still have an impact within the organization.
The reality is that 99 percent of all leadership occurs not from the top but from the middle of an organization. You can learn to develop your influence from wherever you are in the organization.

Five Signs It’s Time for a New Job
Suze Orman lists her 5 ways you know it’s time for a new job.
- Friday is your favorite day.
- You’re bored.
- Stress is your middle name.
- You’re underappreciated (and overworked)
- You Keep Saying, “If I Could Do It All Over, I Would Be a …”
She also offers this sage advice:
Take control of your job destiny and make the moves that will put you in a position to actually enjoy your work. Simply waiting for things to work out, or sticking with a bad situation — playing defense — is a breach of self-respect.
Very good advice all the way around. I’m glad the Tabasco Man gave me similar advice a while back.
More on Disney and Pixar’s Deal

iTunes U for Work?
Just read about the iTunes U service targeted at educational institutions. Schools can place educational material on-line on a customized iTunes site. Students can then access and download the information from anywhere at anytime.
Why couldn’t this be adopted for work purposes? I’ve already taken many on-line courses for work. Too bad these work courses couldn’t be consolidated and published via the iTunes U service. This would open the door to justify an iPod. 😉
