Hunting the Game of Thrones

It all started with this Oatmeal comic about the availability of HBO’s Game of Thrones. So I started hunting for this acclaimed series, and luckily, Season 1 released on March 6, 2012. But which format to get? There’s the physical media (DVD or Blu-ray) then there’s streaming (HD or SD), and relatedly, renting versus owning. I checked around, and here are the prices I found online and at stores.

While I’d love the quality of High Def, I don’t own a Blu-ray player (Steve Jobs told me I don’t need one since my Mac doesn’t have Blu-ray). I’m not a fan of paying to rent individuals shows. I am a Netflix subscriber but don’t want the hassles of waiting for the series of discs to cycle through the mail. And subtitles. I need me some subtitles to read the lingo from the Game of Thrones time frame. So… the best bet looks like getting the physical DVDs from Costco with their $5 instant rebate.

Hauns’ Highlight

,

No lie. You didn’t see this coming for the UH Men’s basketball team. A promising start to their season, solid mid season, then five straight losses to close out their WAC stay. The WAC tournament was just a formality. One and done, right? Then there was that tournament “W” against Idaho who executed Hawaii to a home loss. A chance perhaps?

A 17-0 start to round 2 against New Mexico State. A repeat of the butt-whupping at Las Cruces, NM? Not so. The Bows dug deep and battled. Back and forth, blow after blow until the Warriors finally faltered.

What a game, punctuated by this unbelievably surprising highlight from #21 Hauns Brereton. The broken fast break initiated by 6-10 Vander Joaquim. A dump pass to a streaking Hauns on the right side. An open lane, defenders closing in. One motion, one hand. Right hand under the ball, elevating up, big man Nephawe flying for the block. Posterization. Highlight. Number 2 on ESPN Sportscenter Top Plays of the Day.

Words: Endemic vs Indigenous

There is a difference between endemic and indigenous species as I’ve recently learned. Supposedly, the Hawaiian Red Shrimp, the Opae ula, are endemic to Hawaii and can only be found in Hawaii. That’s different from indigenous species that can be found in other geographies.

Here’s a good article explaining the difference and also distinguishes native and alien species.

From Linkwithin to Outbrain

Made a small change to Pulpconnection’s feature set. For each blog post, there’s a “You Might Like” recommendation section. Previously, these recommendations (with thumbnail images) were provided by Linkwithin. Linkwithin is simple to setup and get running, but there’s not much you can do to modify it.

I happened to come across a similar service called Outbrain. Again, a straight forward installation, but Outbrain provides a few more options, customizations, and a statistical dashboard. So for the time being, recommendations are now powered by Outbrain.

Signs of Hawaii: “Jeprady”

All I could think was, “Oh gosh, no,” when I saw this sign.

Is that supposed to say “jeopardy?” Okay, okay, this sign is for a kids activity to throw balls into the various nets, but I don’t know what “jeprady” is supposed to be. This is so wrong.

Rookies. Every profession has a term for the uninitiated – the newbies, the interns, the freshmen. So don’t be surprised that the sorority of Sports Illustrated swimsuit models has its share of rookies. One of this year’s rookies is Hawaii-raised Michelle Vawer.

Michelle is contending for Swimsuit Rookie of the Year and represents the Aloha State. And yes, she was a swimmer for Team No Ka Oi.

You can vote for Michelle until the contest closes on March 12, 2012.

Athlete-inspired Dishes

Obviously, there’s an inherent connection between professional athletes and food dishes. Get famous in a sport, get food named after you – it’s just a fact of life. Here are two recent examples. Do you recognize them (and the athlete they represent)?

The top picture is Shane Victorino’s Flyin’ Hawaiian Poke sold at Foodland. A locally born outfielder who plays for the Philadelphia Phillies translates to one damn good poke.

The bottom picture is the new special sauce for L&L’s Lin-katsu. Substituting the regular chicken katsu sauce for this special concoction that’s supposed to represent NY Knicks’ Jeremy Lin and his Asian heritage. So that means JLin is a spicy, tad creamy, orange-flavored Oriental (dressing). Um, yeah, sure… but what the heck, I bought a Lin-katsu, and I might buy one again since it’s now available at all L&L’s.
