Manapua Man 1.0
Forget about the reincarnation of the lunch wagon throughout Oahu, forget about the specialty cuisine they serve, this is how it all started – with the Manapua Man.
And never mind that the prepared food is sitting out in the direct sunlight. Still good!
Naughty or Nice Shopping at Ala Moana
Inspired by this Abercrombie and Fitch poster, here are a few naughty and nice items I spied while shopping at Ala Moana.

Kaneohe Christmas Parade Skoshi Kine
Found some pics from the annual Kaneohe Christmas Parade on my camera. Didn’t stay long so here’s just a skoshi amount of pictures.
The best highlight during my short stay was this car and its hydraulics.
Highlights from the Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific Basketball Game
So what if Division I UH took on Division II HPU’s basketball squad? Here are some highlights.
In-Zane Threes. To close out the first half Zane Johnson nailed three 3-pointers. Did you NBA Jam fans yell out, “He’s on fire!!” For the designated marksman on the team, Zane’s not quite automatic. Sure, he’s better than Hawaii’s recent long distance shooters, but he needs his feet set and shoulders squared up, otherwise, clang.
Bullying the Boys. You could see the difference between a Division I and II athlete. Joston Thomas was a bruiser, pushing out the Sea Warriors on his way to the rim. And Douglas Kurtz had 10 boards and several putbacks. Against D1 competition, Kurtz would have had like 4 boards.
The Next Big Man? Vander Joaquim is far from the next Hakeem Olajuwon, but there’s been definite improvement from the Warrior’s center. Vander had a solid dunk in the first half whereas previous UH centers would wind up for the jam but then be stripped of the ball.Later, instead of going with his only offensive move, his right hand jump hook, he reversed pivoted his man for an easy bucket. Good things could be in store.
The best highlight of this game has to be the new Supa Bowzooka from Farmers Hawaii. That thing is downright nasty. Not just for the expanses of Aloha Stadium, this bad boy was shelling fans in the Stan Sheriff Center. Check it out.
Despite all these highlights, there’s that one lowlight still afflicting the Stanley – the funky screens on the overhead scoreboard. Can one of the sponsors please help out with those screens?

More About the Dillingham Transportation Building Redesign
Mesmerized by the architectural redesign of the Dillingham Transportation Building done by Hawaii Architecture? Here’s the concept and inspiration behind this project:
This project was a complete commercial tenant improvement of the first floor and attached mezzanine space of the historic Dillingham Transportation Building. Restored for the Hauoli Mau Loa Foundation that supports youth education and local environmental sustainability, the project has targeted LEED Platinum Certification, the highest and most stringent sustainable accreditation certificate in the industry. In restoring the historical space, we worked to retain the critical and timeless accents, namely the historic faux ceiling treatments, while introducing contemporary solutions for partition walls that allowed natural light to pour deep into the space.

From the flooring to the paint and framing materials, only sustainable or rapidly renewable materials were considered for the build out. In addition, all of the dated systems (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) were upgraded with energy efficient systems including temperature controlled HVAC systems, natural light and occupancy sensored lighting systems, and efficient low flow plumbing fixtures. Even the reception desk was clad with naturally fallen timber procured by a youth group from Hana who reclaimed the dead timber and created the phenomenal wood mosaic that can be seen at the reception desk.
The ultimate goal however was the resultant product that created a space the client truly enjoys and loves to display as they further their work in promoting sustainable stewardship.
If you like the results, the inspiration, and use of sustainable materials, please vote for this design in this Best Installation Contest.
Architecture Blending the Old and the New

I love the the dark wood contrasted by the white walls – very dramatic. And to offset the darkness of the wood, translucent paneling allows for Hawaii’s sunlight to naturally brighten the rooms.

Note: Yes, sadly, to vote in the contest, you need to create an account.

Signs of Hawaii: Buff ‘n Blue Handicap Parking
Pulp reader, Yoda808, came across this buff ‘n blue handicap parking space, but not at Punahou.
I have no idea where this is, but the vehicle that normally parks here needs some maintenance done!
Quick Review of Xtremetacos
So the next generation of lunch wagons aka Lunch Wagon 2.0 is sweeping Hawaii. If your meal ain’t on wheels, then it ain’t Lunch Wagon 2.0. While most of these mobile eateries are located in town, Xtremetacos caters to the Leeward side with some treks into town.
I caught up with Xtremetacos at Stuart Plaza, right outside of Club Join Us. You can’t miss the big yellow truck known as “Ignacio.” Fearing Black Friday-like craziness, I got there early and had to wait just a bit, just enough time to snap some pics.
The menu is straightforward, but I don’t remember seeing the popular Mediterranean Falaco advertised. Also their Twitter special wasn’t announced until much after they opened. I should have asked if there were any specials. 🙁

So I ordered a chicken burrito and went with the X and XX sauces. The XX teared up my eyes a bit, so I don’t know what the potent-est XT would be like. The $6 burrito was hefty, dense with chicken, beans, and rice. While the chicken was plentiful, the taste was on the blander side of flavor. I was definitely full after eating my meal but next time, I’d go wet with enchilada sauce instead of dry.
Would I go again? Yeah, but I’d have to try one of their specials for some extreme tastes.
