Spotted at Don Quijote

While at Cinnamon’s in Kailua, I gave their famous guava chiffon pancakes a shot. These cakes are potent!
They taste amazing at first. That guava flavor hits you and draws you in for more. Then all that sweetness (and a little bit of tartness) starts overwhelming your taste buds. I shoulda gone for a short stack and ordered something salty to offset all that intense guava goodness. Next time…
Until you try them for yourself, savor on this.
My string of encounters with Farmers Insurance Hawaii advertisements continues. This time it was at the movies before showtime.
This was at the Pearlridge theaters for a limited engagement of Thomas & Friends: Thomas & the Runaway Kite.
Spotted a Farmers Insurance Hawaii banner yet again. This time at the Stan Sheriff Center at UH’s oh-so-close loss to New Mexico State.
While at the Pa`ina Ko`olau food court in Windward Mall, I tried out Blazin’ Steaks at the suggestion of @abaggy. A regular steak plate goes for $6 and is absolutely ono!
The plate comes with a healthy helping of salad and two scoops of rice. The steak is thinly cut but not tough or dried out. I think I found a new dining favorite at the mall that cares.
Oh, we also did our part to help out the economy. 🙂
Spotted these distinctive cars over the past weekend. Good ole Wally Amos continues pushing his reading to kids program and donates his time to do just that. How do you know if the Chip & Cookie educator is in the area? You look for his can’t-miss ride of course.
After Herbie the Love Bug retired from movies and television, I didn’t know #53 transplanted to the islands.
My burger from a recent visit to The Counter Burger at Kahala. As usual, great burger, just excuse the messy onions.
As long time Pulpconnection readers know, I write about visits to local shopping malls and often poke fun at the things I see. I have no connections or insider knowledge of these shopping venues, instead reporting back what I publicly observe while strolling around. Coincidentally, Windward Mall has taken the brunt of my ribbing since I frequent there and have seen changes in the mall over the years.
This led to a phone call from the General Manager of Windward Mall, Jonathan Kim. The GM personally called to provide background about the shops in the mall, the effects of the tough economy, and plain and simple, that business happens. Wow! That’s absolutely great! No, not the part about the tough economy affecting business, but the fact that the GM himself found time to reach out to someone who’s shown interest in Windward Mall. He even offered the opportunity for future discussions about the mall. Now that’s caring, and I applaud the management of Windward Mall for this outreach!
What would be even cooler is to see the mall take part in social media opportunities in these times. There’s already a @windwardmall Twitter account so they’re on their way. Maybe something like the recent Pono Media promotion with McDonalds for the newly renovated Pa`ina Ko`olau Food Court with Road Runner wifi access might be a successful way to tap into the social media market. Hawaii does have a fair share of representation in Twitvite’s top users and having tweetups at the Food Court might be a way to magnify all the good things that are happening at the mall that cares.
The pulpy family called in to report the filming of LOST at the Bishop Museum. Amongst the kids exploring Hawaiiana and the scientific wonders of a volcano, Henry Ian Cusick aka Desmond was spotted on set which was decked out like a wedding. So perhaps Penny is on island too?
Since the crew is working and on the clock, I won’t be surprised if we’d be dissed by Desmond again. Anyone at the Halekulani to see if Sonya Walger was there for brunch? Now that Fast Forward is on hiatus, she has some LOST time to spare.
Update: I am so lost on the lawn with this LOST sighting. As usual, the Hawaii Blog has the bestest and accuratest info about what went down. Twasn’t Desmond there for his nuptials but for the nuptials of Ms. Hawking.
Update 2: the Hawaii Blog has more information about this scene which isn’t a wedding after all.
Even with all the improvements, facelifts, and store openings at Windward Mall, there’s always that pessimist’s view of the venerable mall. What am I talking about? See for yourself.
Formerly Foot Locker.
And it looks like the Lady Foot Locker is going.
But don’t worry, business at  Zakka Avenue is kicking.
And of course, this curiosity of the mall, Scrambled, which sells mixed up cereal.
I’m not so sure the mall denizens are ready for Scrambled’s post modern treats…
