The MP3 versus AAC digital music format reminds me the days of Intel x86 processors versus IBM’s PowerPC chips. Each camp would argue the benefits of CISC and RISC architecture and throw in rates like processors speeds to confuse things (aka the Megahertz wars).
Same now with music files. Does an MP3 sound better than an AAC music file? Now throw in encoding rates. 128kbps, 192kpbs, 256 kbps? What’s the best bang for the buck? Does it really matter any more?
Tuesdays mark the new releases for music and movies, but this week, the iTunes Store doesn’t seem to have anything new. The New and Noteworthy section has a lot of retreaded material (Britney Spears’ Circus is not new).
But today is also the first day of Macworld Expo with its “Phil-harmonic” where Apple Senior VP, Phil Schiller, is doing the honors instead of Steve Jobs. Is this musical retread a sign of changes coming to the iTunes Store to be announced at the Expo? Pricing change? No more DRM? In a few short hours, we will see…

Not surprisingly, I don’t rank since I only tweet here and there, but you do see quite a few familiar faces.
So it turns out Apple mastermind, Steve Jobs, isn’t gravely ill after all. Instead, he’s disclosed that he has a hormone imbalance that’s caused his weight loss throughout 2008.
I’m thinking he’s just discovered the latest dietary fad and is proof positive that it works. Okay, okay, you won’t get immediate results, but losing weight overtime ain’t bad either. So now that the docs have figured out what’s wrong with Steve, Steve’s going to patent the diagnosis for a career after Apple. Can’t wait to see Steve Jobs on late night infomercials pushing his hormone imbalance diet.
On the eve of Macworld Expo, Roxio released a new major upgrade to its Toast disc burning software. Toast 10 comes in a regular and pro version with a bunch of new features.
On the TIvo front, Toast 10 lets you play content stored on your Mac to your Tivo and lets you stream Tivo recordings to your iPhone over the Internet.
Interesting features but the cost of upgrading is expensive at $80 for the regular version and $130 for the pro version.
After the 23rd edition of the Air Jordans, I thought Nike would stop the AJ legacy after reaching his Airness’ jersey number. Nope. The Jordan Brand rolls on with the upcoming release of the Air Jordan 2009.
What better way to show love for the eternal Air Jordans than releasing them on Valentine’s Day 2009?
Dancing with the Stars regulars, Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, are getting hitched after a New Year’s engagement. There are already a few husband-wife dancers on the show so add these two to the list.
Cross Maks off the Bromance list.
At the UH Men’s basketball WAC season opener against Boise State (which they loss), the squad displayed new team shoes.
These look like the Adidas TS Team Creators in a custom UH colorway that most of the team wore except for Roderick Flemings who’s still rocking his Rainbow Warrior Editions.
Hot or not? Personally, I prefer Rod’s bedazzling Undercrwns and think the Creators are just okay. But the Tabasco Man’s nachos are definitely hot!
Just a reminder that the last Macworld Expo attended by Apple starts on Tuesday. Steve Jobs is not set to deliver the keynote but could he be the “one more thing” surprise of the event?
And as usual, rumors about Macworld announcements are abound.
Added a new blog to my list of blogs I read, aka my blogroll. Check out The Scratching Post which is described as “a cat and a hamster dispense cheerful prudiciousness gained from hard experience.” This blog is maintained by none other than the cerebral K T Cat.
