HFMD Affects Macs?

Who woulda though HFMD affects Macintosh computers? My recent iMac went down this morning, and this one looks bad. The internal drive isn’t acting quite right. The boot CD Disk Utility can see the drive, but it looks unformatted.

Ack!

I bought Leopard for Time Machine and it’d better work!! But first have to figure out what’s up the main drive. Maybe I’ll try resetting the System Management Controller to see if that helps any. Maybe it is the Western Digital internal drive like people in this post are reporting.

Home Remedy for HFMD

Even though there’s no medical cure for HFMD, here’s our home remedy which is making things more bearable – Tivo loaded up with all kinds of cartoons and Jamba Juice.

No better pain relief than vegetating in front of the television, and while eating solids is too tough, non-citrus Jamba Juice is just right.

One of the interesting aspects of HealthPass is tracking your body measurements over time. During HealthPass sessions, your weight, body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and more are recorded and compared to previous years.

Some stats. This year I’m 4 pounds less than last year but 6 pounds more from 1995. Body fat is the same as last year but 4% more as recorded in ’95. Cholesterol level in 95 was 130, last year 163, this year 157. My HDL level was 35 last year but 43 this year (40 or higher is good).

Long Week…

Was a long week this past week. Everyday was a grind. The most I’ve dabbled in PowerPoint and Excel in a long time – pivot tables, charting results. Then had to present the stuff.

Falling behind in emails and blog posts. I did forget to write about last week’s Top Chef where the other half of the lesbian couple was sent home.

Today was busy with some fun. More training in the morning. Fun at Farrell’s at lunch followed by some strategy talk with Wayne’s World. More blogging at work? Quite possibly.

Stuck in traffic on the way home.

Matt Mullenweg of WordPress in Hawaii

Thanks to Ryan of the Hawaii Blog, I learned that WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg was going to be speaking at the Mac a’hiki TechFest. I normally don’t attend these tech sessions since free time is scarce, but I was intrigued by this Internet celebrity visiting Hawaii.


Running late, I made it to the conference, but Matt was on Hawaiian time so I didn’t miss out on anything. Matt’s talk centered around WordPress (surprise!), its origin, his philosophy, and more. For the crowd present, Matt did a good job showcasing WordPress and blogging in general and probably got a few WP converts and new users from this. Matt also showed off some upcoming work like the Monotone theme designed for photo bloggers. Nice!

What was most impressive wasn’t Matt’s MacBook Air or the fact that he used a Vista laptop for the presentation. It was Matt’s clarity and vision for someone so young. I’m sure by now, he’s done enough public speaking engagements that it’s no big deal, but you can still see and feel his passion for his work. That’s impressive.

Maybe impressive enough to move Pulpconnection on over to WordPress…

Starbucks Pick of the Week Shaky Start in Hawaii

It’s only week 2 of the recent Starbucks Pick of the Week music promotion, and already it’s off to a shaky start in Hawaii. I found the first Pick, the Counting Crows’ Washington Square, but that’s all.

I haven’t been able to find the pick for week 2 at two Starbucks locations. I went on a Tuesday when I thought new songs were released, but my neighborhood Starbucks didn’t have it. I went on a Thursday to a different location, and they didn’t have the new song either. This location was located inside of a Borders, and the workers thought there might be some kind of conflict of interest or something that prevented this location from participating in this free music promotion.

On Friday, I stopped by my neighborhood Starbucks again just to see if the new music pick had arrived but still nothing. Is this a statewide problem, an entire promotion problem, or just plain bad luck for me?

Delayed Weekend

Tried to get a jump start on the weekend but instead had a delayed weekend. On Friday, we planned to head to the Iolani Family Fair when they opened. But we had to wait for our water heater installation, so a lunch arrival time turned into a dinner arrival.

On Saturday, we were going for dim sum at Royal Garden in the Ala Moana Hotel at 11:30. Turned out closer to 12:30 after finding parking at a packed Ala Moana. The new Nordstrom’s parking structure has tons of covered parking, so if you’re willing to walk a bit, save some time and head straight there. While at the Ala Moana Hotel, saw quite a few attendees of the Comic Convention(?) walking around dressed up in some outlandish outfits.

The new Nordstrom’s area is impressive. A little different feel from the rest of Ala Moana since it was designed new, not just retrofitted from the existing mall spaces. Lots more stores added and the relocated Williams Somoma is huge. I didn’t go inside the new Nordstrom but did get a Mexican Mocha from their eBar.

AK Appliance is Alright!

Earlier in the week, our gas water heater gave way, and we got a replacement Kenmore from Sears. Only problem was installation was scheduled for next week! That’s a long time without hot water.

We called the contracted installers, AK Appliance, to see if we could get an earlier date. Lo and behold, Alan, the owner of All Kine Appliance, squeezed us in today. Since we had young kids in the household, he made an exception and juggled his schedule to get our heater installed. Thanks Alan!
