Best Lines from Top Chef “Meat Natalie”
Some risque lines from last night’s episode of Top Chef titled “Meat Natalie.” The Top Chef contestants took over Tom Colicchio’s craftsteak steak house in Las Vegas but was thrown a gigantic curve when they had to prepare a vegetarian meal for Natalie Portman.
Overheard at dinner…
Padma: “it’s like a little prick in my mouth at the tip of my tongue… then it got big in my mouth.”
Natalie, her friends, and Tom couldn’t stop laughing.

CNN Geekologist, Chris Pirillo, shows Windows 7 running on a Mac via VMWare. Here’s his segment.
And yes, Chris will be attending the upcoming [re]thinkHawaii.
It Was a Matter of Time…
It was only a matter of time. Dancing with the Stars is already certified sexy, and you’ve seen the sexy outfits, right? Soon, DWTS Season 9 star, Joanna Krupa, is taking sexy to a new level with her appearance in Playboy. Yes, the model will be showing her paso and her doble sans the costume in the iconic men’s mag in November.
But who’s ready for Donny Osmond in Playgirl?!? Thankfully, that’s a joke!
Hawaii News Now Refreshes Its Blogs
KGMB9 did wonders with its blogs and building trust with them, and I’m glad to see this facet transition over to the new mega KGMB-KHNL-KFVE merger known as Hawaii News Now.
The new news station has refreshed its blogroll, bringing in some new bloggers. Minna Sugimoto goes Behind the Yellow Tape, videojournalist Duane Shimogawa says Par-Duane Me!, Mari-Ela David shares her thoughts on Slippah Talk, and Stephanie Lum writes on Steph On It!
And don’t worry, the blogging “veterans” are still at it. Ben Gutierrez, Howard Dicus, Malika Dudley, Oscar Valenzuela, Dan Cooke, and blogging queen Tannya Joaquin continue to post (some more frequently than others). What happened to the tech-focused blog run by Jared? If this blog makes a comeback, how about the name of “Plain Tech” as in plainly explaining the behind-the-scenes technology and also a play on words of “plain text” (versus rich text in the geeky world).
Congratulations on the launch of Hawaii News Now and keep on blogging!
The Smackdown of Week 6 of Dancing with the Stars
Was Week 5 of Dancing with the Stars a setup? Did you see the smackdowns and metaphoric falls in Week 6? The judges, especially the normally ebullient Bruno, turned hardass, giving accurate but harsh critiques.
Who was up this week and who was down? Personally, I was surprised by the gainers of the week, Aaron Carter and Michael Irvin. Carter’s been performing better each week but hasn’t resonated with the fans. On the other hand, Irvin (and his ESPN radio talk show) has a significant fan base keeping his mediocre dancing going each week. But in Week 6, the waltz was their salvation. For whatever reason, both performed their renditions of the difficult and rigid waltz, and it worked. Both stars looked connected with their pro partners and might have given them extra time on the show.
The biggest gain though came from homeboy Mark Dacascos. Yeah, I might be biased for the Hawaii boy, but I think his jitterbug might be the first true “connection” of this season. Maybe it was Donny’s performance in Week 5, but you could sense the transformation in Mark and Lacey’s jumping jitterbug. Sure, the dance was exciting and energetic, but did you see how Mark was part of the performance. The dance exuded himself, and he owned the dance. The fans all felt it, giving him an extended standing ovation. These are the connections that make DWTS winners. Go ask Drew, Emmitt, Helio, and Kristi. See for yourself!
Who was toppled in Week 6? Kelly Osbourne and Melissa Joan Hart might be the ones in tonight’s double elimination. Kelly’s story is getting old without any or fast enough progress. Her own insecurities again came into light as holding her back. Sound familiar? Melissa Joan Hart just isn’t making the strides needed to stay with the competition.
Louie Vito stayed status quo which isn’t necessarily a good thing as everyone moves forward. Mya’s jitterbug was good and showing her getting a topless massage is an insidious way of garnering votes.
Even though Donny Osmond and Kym’s jitterbug wasn’t as good as Mark and Lacey’s, they sure incited the choo choo fans. The showman appeal runs through his veins. What can I say but Derek Hough is the man. Joanna Krupa ain’t terrible, but Derek and his choreography is such an advantage.
Watch tonight as two couples are eliminated.
A Gun-slinging Cowboy Takes Down Wonder Woman!
I was so sure that former NFL wide receiver, Michael Irvin, would be the next one to go on Dancing with the Stars that I didn’t pay attention to Tuesday’s results show. But on the week that Cowboy Irvin flashed his “guns,” he was able to fell the Olympian Wonder Woman, Natalie Coughlin.
That’s a big loss from the ladies camp (remaining are Krupa, Osbourne, Hart, Mya). The men (Carter, Osmond, Vito, Dacascos, Irvin) caught a break this week.
A Setup in Week 5 of Dancing with the Stars
This past week of Dancing with the Stars had to be a set up for things to come. The lowest score in Week 5 was a 21?! Len Goodman consistently giving out higher scores than Bruno? All I can say is watch out in Week 6 as the feelgood is gone!
Natalie Coughlin looked great as Wonder Woman but her performance made me wonder if she can make it to the medal rounds. Aaron Carter definitely redeemed himself this week, but what was that pseudo-military uniform he was wearing in the pre-dance clip?
I really didn’t like Michael Irvin’s paso doble, but he got respectable scores and commendations from the judges. Remember the set up mentioned above? I still think Michael’s the next one to go, but if he makes it through Week 5, he’s going to get ripped in Week 6 if he doesn’t dominate.
Mya is still the front running lady and the Argentine Tango to Jem’s They was solid. Can newcomer pro partner Dmitry bring out and sustain the best in Mya? Mark Dacascos had a good week with his smoking paso doble with Lacey. Never mind she looked like the Big Red Chicken from Dora the Explorer, her paso entrance was literally smoking!
Donny Osmond and Kym had the biggest breakthrough of the week, almost achieving perfection. With Donny’s hectic schedule, can he maintain this intensity? Chelsie and Louie Vito are struggling, and Chelsie continues to compensate by overperforming. They make a cute couple though.
Derek Hough => Mark Ballas and Joanna Krupa > Melissa Joan Hart. Therefore Derek & Joanna > Mark & Melissa. And Joanna is like the inducer of gribbles involved with flubs with both Derek Hough and fill-in partner Maksim.
Love Kelly Osbourne’s story, dancing to Ozzie’s Crazy Train, and garbing Louis in heavy makeup. She needs some of Wonder Woman’s mental toughness to keep her in the game though.
Get ready for some rough scores in Week 6!
Could Andrew Wiggins Play for Hawaii?
Can the supposedly best 13-year old basketball player play hoops at UH? At 6-6, Andrew Wiggins will probably (if not already) be recruited by the big name schools, but why not play in the Aloha State?
Additions and Deletions to Pulpconnection
Had to do some tuning to Pulpconnection after a rash of meltdowns and poor performance. Thanks to the duo of @ryankanno and @mirthlab, I made a few changes hopefully for the better.

- Skribit. Good idea to get suggestions but never was used so I removed the service and its Javascript.
- Google FriendConnect. This may make a reappearance in the future, but for now, it didn’t pan out. I really don’t know what benefit it brings. There’s potential, but it just ain’t here yet. Bye, bye more Javascript.
- Amung.us. Pure eye candy that has similar data in Google Analytics so not needed here.
- TweetMeme plugin. You see this plugin quite often but wasn’t catching on here so disabled this WordPress plugin.
Added
- Image caching. Didn’t know you had to enable image caching in Apache. Lots to learn, but I think basic caching of common images is working.
- WP Super Cache. The defacto WP Cache wasn’t working right anyways so why not go with Super Cache?
- WPtouch iPhone Theme. To speed up the pulp experience on a mobile device like an iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phone.
- Twitter2Press. Just experimenting with this in the new Gallery section. My images posted on Twitter are now hosted here (and given a pulp.ly shortened URL). Makes sense.
There were a few other minor changes I made (like bumping up my DreamHost Private Server memory just a tad), and overall, performance has been more stable. But boy, the withdrawal from all the blogging bling (like this one) is hard to deal with. 🙁
What’s the State of the Blogosphere in 2009?
Find out by viewing Technorati’s annual study. For blogging hobbyists, here’s the deal:
- Blog for fun
- Don’t make money blogging – and only half would like to someday
- Blog to express themselves (76%)
Sound familiar?
