You already know Amazon has great deals but now you get a bonus! If you spend $25 or more on qualifying CDs or electronic items, you’ll get $5 credit to spend in Amazon’s MP3 store.
$5 doesn’t seem like a lot, but then again, did you know Amazon has specials on their MP3 downloads? Take a look at their 50 Albums for $5 Each, or that $5 credit can get you the Twilight soundtrack (with Paramore’s Decode and Bella’s Lullaby) for a mere $2.99.
Go shopping for CDs and electronics and take advantage of this promotion. Heck, you can now shop even easier on your iPhone. This deal expires on December 25, 2008.
Amazon App for Your iPhone
Amazon recently released Amazon Mobile, an iPhone app designed to make shopping at Amazon easier while on the go.
You can even try the experimental Amazon Remembers that lets you take a picture of an item using your iPhone and Amazon tries to match that picture with their products.
Rainbow Warriors Edition Adidas
Money, it’s got to be the shoes!
-Mars Blackmon
After his 22-point, 13-rebound performance against Prairie View A&M, UH forward Roderick Flemings credited his new “Rainbow Warriors Edition” Adidas. I tried getting a clean look from the Tivo-ed game, but all I could come up with is this.

Here’s the video at full speed.
I can’t identify the $175 kicks. Anyone?
More Tivo Love
One more note about why I love my Tivo – online scheduling. UH’s mens basketball against Prairie View A&M was on pay-per-view last night but the free replay is set for today at 10:00. While at work, I can log into Tivo.com and remotely schedule the recording.

Nice! I need to check out Roderick Fleming’s “Rainbow Warrior Edition” kicks he credits for his breakout game scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 boards.
Tivo Notes from a Fan
Some notes from a Tivo fan.
Tivo with HD rocks! Oh the clarity and colors! Add a CableCard, and you’re off. The Tivo pulls in the updated channel guide and readjusts Season Passes with the correct channels.
Tivo HD recordings are huge! Only problem with recording in HD is the file size. 90 minutes of HD content weighs in at about 12 GB! Try transferring that over WiFi. Takes hours. Then to convert and edit? We’re talking an order of magnitude of difference.
Try out iTiVo. I’ve been using Roxio Toast with Tivo Transfer to get recorded shows to my Mac and iPhone. But then I found the open source iTiVo which does the same thing but for free. And it can transfer and convert videos in a combined step compared to Toast which involves a two step process (Tivo Transfer then Toast to convert).
Adding additional storage capacity is easy if you buy the Tivo Expander. From mixed research, it sounded like you could add any external eSATA drive to a Tivo HD unit to add extra storage. I tried and killed a perfectly good drive. Not sure what happened but the drive got so hot, I think it burned itself out. I then went with the approved WD 500 GB Tivo/DVR Expander and no problems. Now I can record HD content without worrying about running out of space.
Tivo Holiday Packages with Lifetime Service is available again. Tivo is bundling a Tivo HD or HD XL, the lifetime service, WiFi adapter, and $50 of entertainment for $600. Sounds expensive but well, well worth it.

The Simpsons Mock Apple
Apple has definitely made it big! In The Simpsons, the Springfield Mall gets a “Mapple” store which looks vaguely familiar, stocked with myPods, myPhones, and myCubes. And good ole Bart hijacks the digital likeness of his Steveness and delivers some sacrilegious comments.
Watch a portion from Hulu (sorry, screen size got chopped off a little).

Musta Been Naughty This Year
During the Holiday season, Amazon has its Customer Vote special deals where customers vote for the deals they want. This year there are 6 rounds with 3 deals per round.
To be eligible for these deals, you need to first place your vote for the deal you want. Then Amazon randomly picks voters to participate. If you’re randomly selected, you’ll be notified by email. Go back to Amazon and wait for your deal to become active then try your luck again to see if you can actually land one of the limited deals.
We got past the first lucky selection, picked for Round 3: Go High-Def that featured a Samsung LN46A550 LCD HDTV ($699), a Sony Blu-Ray player ($149), and a Samsung 14.7 MP digital camera ($179).

But I musta been naughty this year since Amazon Santa didn’t visit our house when delivering the HDTV and Blu-Ray player (in a few minutes, I’ll try for the camera).
Update: Maybe I wasn’t so naughty after all. Santa dropped off the Samsung digital camera from his bag of goodies at a $80 discounted price. Do I need a new digital camera? Not really, but couldn’t resist a supposedly 14 megapixel camera. 😉

Give with Starbucks Red
Starbucks and (PRODUCT)RED have joined up to donate funds to the Global Fund. With each purchase of Starbucks’ holiday drinks (peppermint mocha twist, gingersnap latte, or espresso truffle), Starbucks donates a nickel to save lives in Africa. When making your purchase at Starbucks locations, look for the big red ( ) and take a picture inside of the parenthesis.
You can then upload your RED picture at starbucks.com/red and be part of their collage. With your donation, you can also see how many days of medicine you’re bringing to those in need.
Here’s my RED picture (you can search by profile name, store, or region to filter out pictures).
Twilight Through Old Eyes
Instead of spending Black Friday hunting for deals, me and the Mrs. headed to Pearlridge to fight off the crowds to watch Twilight the movie. Yes, we were about two to three times older than the average Twilighter, but so what? Twilight is a box office beast, and we read the books so why not see how the movie rendition turned out?
The movie reviews said this was an average flick, and I would have to agree with that. I’d give Twilight at most 3 out of 5 stars, maybe even 2.5 stars. I know most movie adaptions of books don’t live up to the hype, and Twilight falls victim as well. There were some high points, but in general, the movie story line felt like it was stuck in fast forward. Everything seemed to skip and jump ahead without enough explanation. If I hadn’t read the book, I doubt if I could have kept up or understood what just happened. Still, the movie is a good starting point for the entire Twilight saga. We’re not talking Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter yet but a decent start.
Some notes and observations.
Bella is hot, Edward not so much. Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan was a good pick. She’s come a long way from Panic Room.
I’ll be in the minority with the teeny boppers, but Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen? Could have done better I think. Problem is in the book, vampires are absolutely stunning. Rob Pattinson has a look, but he’s not the uber-looker and has some flaws which Twilight vampires aren’t supposed to have.
Forks is hip and multicultural. I didn’t give the tiny town of Forks enough credit. In the movie, the Forks High School is a hip place with a multicultural student body. Yes, there are a fair share of blondes, but there’s the Asian Eric, the Hispanic Angela and brother man Tyler who drives the pimped out van that almost kills Bella. Many students walk the soaked campus showing off the iconic iPod white earbuds. Nothing like the small, rural locale that I had stereotyped.
Father figures must be young. Okay, I get Carlisle Cullen’s youthful appearance as an immortal vampire. But Charlie Swan and Billy Black? The respective fathers of Bella and Jacob look way too young for teenager kids. I would have preferred a wiser, more aged Billy Black to represent the Quileute tribe.
The Cullens don’t say much. Except for Edward, the rest of the Cullens didn’t say much in the movie. Carlisle had a few lines then I’d guess Rosalie had the second most lines to say. Alice and Esme contributed some. Emmett had very few words, and Jasper was just there looking terrified. They were all outdone by the goofy Asian Eric. Was he straight, was he gay, was he hip, was he hop? It’s high school, so he’s experimenting, but he did say more than the entire Cullen family.
Need to step up the special effects. So this was a low budget film for the fledgling Summit Entertainment, and it showed in spots. Edward flying through the trees was believable, but superhuman speed needs better effects. Now that New Moon got the go-ahead, the special effects crew really needs to step up to portray a pack of huge shape-shifting wolves.
There is a soundtrack. Yes, Twilight has an official soundtrack with at least 12 tracks and its accompanying score. Yet with all this music to choose from, I don’t recall hearing most of them. I didn’t stick around through the closing credits so many may have played then. But most definitely, Bella’s Lullaby was over played.
Go for a cheap DVD release. When Twilight releases on DVD or Blu-Ray, I’d go with aggressive pricing. Keep costs down at the outset and sell as many copies as you can. I don’t think this is a movie worth paying a premium for so best to go for quantity of sales from the very start.
Would I watch the movie again? Nope. But this is one of the very few movies to get me back in the theater. Go see it to see what I mean.
Caught with Copyright on YouTube
Yes, you’re not supposed to have copyrighted material on YouTube, but if you’ve ever visited the popular video site, you’d never know the better. You’ll see all kinds of copyrighted material including music videos, snippets from movies, commercials, and television shows.
But YouTube does police the content uploaded by its users. I know cause I’ve been busted by the YouTube Content Identification program… a few times. There are a few options for this program. The owner of the original copyrighted material can outright ban your offending YouTube upload or they can monitor the stats of your video.
So far, I have 2 blocked videos and 2 monitored ones, and I won’t aggravate the situation further by identifying which ones. Just know that YouTube is watching…
