No Neon Electricity for Baylor

Baylor has been undefeated in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament while wearing their neon “Electricity” uniforms and matching adidas adiZero Crazy Light 2. But in their matchup with Kentucky today, they’ll have to wear their black unis to better contrast the Wildcats jersey colors. Not sure if neon electricity looks similar to Kentucky’s blue and white, but I guess both color schemes are on the lighter spectrum.

Gotta give props to Baylor for such a striking (and outlandish) colors scheme. Seems like a trend in the post season and special events (like the NBA All Star game) to go bright and bold with the color choices.

Or so it seems. Why else would I get these discount coupons for Supercuts in Port Saint Lucie, Florida? I mean, the coupons are addressed to Resident so I must be a resident of Florida.

But there is a Hawaii connection here. You see the City of Port Saint Lucie recently held an event where former New York Mets pitcher, Ron Darling, was a guest. If you’re a fan of the ’86 Mets then you know about Ron Darling and his ties to Hawaii. So just maybe, Supercuts Port Saint Lucie wanted to extend the aloha from Florida to Hawaii??

The marketing staff at L&L Barbecue has been busy recently, thinking of ways to play off of pop culture. There was the Jeremy Lin inspired Lin-katsu, and now it’s the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games. Introducing the No Hunger Huge Plate.

Yeah, yeah, clunky name but how can you resist a plate lunch that can feed an entire family? Meat, 3 scoops rice, and 2 heaps of mac salad, yeah, that won’t leave you hungry.

March Madness 2012 Kicks Analysis #2: Conference Sponsorships

The selection of teams from the various NCAA conferences has a typical feel year to year.  The Big East has its share of teams (9) and represents all three sneaker sponsorships in the tournament (Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour).  The “biggest” gainer seems to be the West Coast Conference, up from one team in 2011 to three in 2012 (BYU, Gonzaga, and Saint Mary’s).

March Madness 2012 Kicks Analysis #1: Shoe Sponsorship

College basketball championships are won or lost by the shoes the team wears. Well, that’s my kicks-slanted theory anyways. And to kick off March Madness 2012, here is the analysis of kicks for the Round of 64.

No surprise that Nike leads the shoe sponsorships claiming 76% of those still dancing in the NCAAs. That 76% equates to 49 teams donning the swoosh. Adidas is represented by a dozen, and newcomer Under Armour has South Florida, Temple, and Loyola (MD) to thank.

Year to year, how has the shoe sponsorships varied? It’s been a Nike-dominated tourney, and yeah, I took a break from analyzing kicks in 2010.

Hunting the Game of Thrones

It all started with this Oatmeal comic about the availability of HBO’s Game of Thrones. So I started hunting for this acclaimed series, and luckily, Season 1 released on March 6, 2012. But which format to get? There’s the physical media (DVD or Blu-ray) then there’s streaming (HD or SD), and relatedly, renting versus owning. I checked around, and here are the prices I found online and at stores.

While I’d love the quality of High Def, I don’t own a Blu-ray player (Steve Jobs told me I don’t need one since my Mac doesn’t have Blu-ray). I’m not a fan of paying to rent individuals shows. I am a Netflix subscriber but don’t want the hassles of waiting for the series of discs to cycle through the mail. And subtitles. I need me some subtitles to read the lingo from the Game of Thrones time frame. So… the best bet looks like getting the physical DVDs from Costco with their $5 instant rebate.
