Crazy Blood Donor Questions

Not sure if this is the norm, but if you ever donate blood, you’re typically interviewed for “high risk” activities. Sometimes, you just want to laugh at some of these questions.

I don’t remember the questions exactly, but they go something like this… Have you ever had violent sex with animals while in prison and paid for it… in the past 72 hours. Again, not the exact wording, but you get the point.

Of course, you have to sit there and appear to ponder the question before answering.

So Close to Winning Twilight Movie Tickets, Part 2

On Saturday night, we headed to Pearlridge to check what was left after a Toys R Us sale and Gap’s Friends and Family. We also caught a Twilight “party” at Borders that was giving a lucky winner tickets to the Twilight movie premiere on November 21. To enter to win, all you had to do was submit a Twilight word search game and hope for the best. There were other activities planned for this party, but we didn’t stick around, returning only at the time of the drawing.

The event was pretty empty and the Borders staff didn’t even didn’t know what was going on with this Twilight promotion, but a fair amount of people did gather, mostly teens. For the prize drawing, there were three prizes – two Twilight posters and of course, the movie tickets.

And whaddya know, I won a poster, the name called right before the tickets were given away! So close! Not sure what to do with the poster. But anyways some pictures including my Twilight prize.

Twin Tumblebuses

There are actually two Tumblebuses! I passed both of them on the road one day. Always thought the Tumblebus was a sole vehicle operation.

My Digital Plan: SDV Tuning Adapter Pre-Order

After a successful CableCard install from Oceanic Cable, I just got a letter explaining Oceanic’s upcoming shift to SDV (Switched Digital Video). The letter is actually pretty good, clearly explaining the benefits of SDV and why the current CableCards will not work once the SDV change is made.

To compensate for the SDV change, Oceanic (and Time Warner Cable) is expected to offer Tuning Adapters later this year (which is coming up quick). “It is currently contemplated that the Tuning Adapter will be provided at no additional charge.”

To be eligible for a Tuning Adapter, the letter ways to visit www.timewarnercable.com/tuningadapter or call 643-2337. The web link doesn’t do much and is the same one I used previously. I called the phone number which took me to Oceanic’s Customer Support. The night crew didn’t know a thing about this offer, but I got a call back today asking me to fax or send in my letter to reserve my spot for a Tuning Adapter.

I scanned a copy of my letter and sent it to csrsupport@twcable.com. Let’s see what happens next (and when it happens)…

My Digital Plan: Where’d the Channels Go?

Last week, an Oceanic Cable installer came by to install a CableCard into my Tivo. Took about 30 minutes since he said they don’t do this very often and wasn’t completely familiar with all the steps. Funny, but both he and I had the same CableCard install instructions provided by Tivo.

Once the single M-card was activated, the Tivo Channel Guide started pulling in new info. The cable guy showed me the new HD channels I had, namely 1003-1010 for channels 3 (KHON)-10 (KHET). But what he didn’t tell me or what I failed to understand is what happened to the rest of the channels. I went looking for the kids channels, 32 and 33, but they weren’t there anymore. What happened?

After calling Oceanic tech support, I was told that I had to use their digital television lineup/channels, not the analog lineup. The Disney channel is now on 444 for example. Now this is a complete surprise since I now have digital channels that I did not request (and hopefully should not be paying for). From what I know, I’m only paying $3.10 per month for the CableCard, maybe $6.20 since the CableCard is a dual M-card type, but I didn’t sign up for Oceanic’s digital services. I’ll have to check out my next bill to see what’s up.

Bunch of Circuit City Stores Closing Down?

Not that much of a surprise, but Circuit City might be closing down quite a few of its stores, possibly 155 of them before the Holiday season begins. A list of closing locations is supposed to be available on Monday, November 3.

Oahu, Hawaii has a single Circuit City location so I doubt that it’ll close, but you got to wonder. This store never has any sale items in stock it seems. Every time I go there after Sunday’s sale ads, I never find the items available. It’s such a waste of time that I pretty much ignore CC and do business with BestBuy instead.

Halloween 2008

Ventured out to Mililani Mauka for Halloween 2008 and was scared of the traffic mess experienced a few years back. Traffic was surprisingly light for a Friday with no real slowdowns. Maybe Trick or Treaters were headed elsewhere this year?

At least it wasn’t rainy like 2007. The amount of kids walking around was less, but of course, there was lots of candy to be had in this kid-friendly neighborhood.

And what would Halloween be without a pumpkin carving by Kazuo? This year, it’s Snoopy and Iron Man!



One of the homes at the end of the street went all out with their Halloween decorations while another home’s interior was already decked out for Christmas with a (fake) Christmas tree and a life-sized Santa Claus(!). Those MMauka-ians take seasonal decorating seriously… unless you’re a fan of Charlie Brown and the dead tree branch.
