Naveen Andrews and a Long Lost Hawaii Legend

While Naveen thrills millions of viewers on LOST week to week, what also caught me by surprise at this chance meeting was the sight of a long lost Hawaii legend. Assisting Naveen with his shopping was, I assume, a personal shopper of the store. Seeing this guy again brought back forgotten memories. I don’t know his name, but I remember his face and his well coiffed look. This guy has been in the game for a long time, going back to the men’s shoe department at Liberty House Pearlridge.

Over the years, I don’t know how many pairs of shoes I bought from this fashionista. Heck, I probably bought my Nike Huarache basketball kicks in high school from him. Work shoes, dress shoes, casual shoes, you name it, he was there. Many from the Leeward side were probably assisted by his shoe horn.

In the recent years though I didn’t see this guy around so it was good to see that he was still doing his thing though moving to a new locale and perhaps expanding his scope to include all fashions. Me and Naveen thank this long lost Hawaii legend for his continued passion for fashion.

How do you make an infant lie still for 90 minutes while a GI test is being done using a radioactive isotope? You better have an iPhone 3G handy, that’s how.

To see how things were working on the inside, this GI test was done but badly described to us. Instead of lying down, taking a picture then go play and repeat, it was lie down for 90 minutes straight, don’t leave the table. For an infant who just woke up, lying down doing nothing for one and a half hours is crazy.

We brought DVDs and a portable player, but there was no interest. Holding on to toys provided little comfort. Then I pulled out my iPhone 3G with a segment of Sesame Street on it. Instant silence and contentment as he watched Feist sing her adapted hit, 1234.

Elmo provided some relief as well. But when replays of this Sesame Street segment started losing its appeal, a jump over to YouTube brought in more distracting material. Norah Jones and Elmo singing Don’t Know Why, Debbie Harry and Kermit singing Rainbow Connection, and Andrea Bocelli singing Elmo to sleep.

90 minutes and a drained iPhone battery later, relived parents say thanks Apple and Sesame Street!

iPod Earbud Cords Are a Safe Length

I never knew why earphone and earbud cord lengths are the way they are. Now I know. I go for walks listening to my iPod, and one time, I was in a rush and and my iPod slipped out of my hands as I was turning it on.

Fortunately, I already had the earbuds in place . As the iPod fell towards the ground, I saw the earbud cord unravel and act as a safety line keeping my iPod from crashing to the ground. Whew!

So I’d say the iPod earbud cords are a safe length.

Bad Gadget Karma

Been having a rash of bad karma with the gadgets lately. My Sennheiser MX75 earphones have developed tears in various locations of the cord. They still work, but these tears can’t be good.

My Nike+ iPod running kit is acting up from time to time. Not sure if the battery is running low, but sometimes the iPod doesn’t see the shoe sensor.

And lastly, my poor Zutto coffee maker has a small crack in the glass pot. Finding a replacement cheaply might be a challenge.

Hope that’s the last of this bad karma!

Up Energy Coffee

Just picked up a new addition to the energy drink market. Royal Mills, makers of my favorite canned iced coffee drinks, is now selling their Up Energy Coffee drinks. I forget the exact tagline describing these drinks, but it’s something like the coffee drink that woke up. Available in mocha or cappuccino flavors.


Cost is expensive at $1.30 per 11 oz can. The regular Royal Mills coffee drinks are about $0.65 a can while on sale.

Will live blog my tasting of Up in the near future so be on the lookout.

Tag That Song. SHAZAM!

Ever hear a song and wonder what it is? If you don’t get text in the airwaves, then what? Shazam!

Shazam is a free iPhone app that records music, analyzes it, and tells you the name of the song in seconds. And it works! I don’t know how, but it does.

I tested Shazam at the Farm Fair at Bishop Museum over the weekend. Power 104.3’s KC and Taka were the emcees, and the radio station pumped out contemporary tunes. I held up my iPhone, started Shazam, and the app started recording. After about 20 seconds, Shazam correctly identified the song as Rihanna’s Umbrella.

Bobby Brown Sat at the Bar…

R&B music legend Bobby Brown sat at the bar as I circled around unsure if that was really him. What was he doing at the poolside bar in the early afternoon?

Could it really be him? Don’t Be Cruel… My Prerogative… Roni… Every Little Step… Humpin’ Around… Rock Wit’cha… his cameo in Ghostbusters II along with On Our Own… She Ain’t Worth It with Glenn Medeiros.

Was he still with Whitney? His younger days with New Edition, teaming with Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe. Can You Stand the Rain?… Cool It Now… If It Isn’t Love… Candy Girl…

Was this THE Bobby Brown sitting there, chilling, watching ESPN highlights? Do I approach him and ask for a picture? Do I take a paparazzi shot? Too many thoughts, didn’t act, Bobby got up and left, leaving the chair where Bobby Brown sat.
