Darn You DWTS Mirrorball!
Darn you Dancing with the Stars!! After staying away for the last season, I made the mistake of taking a peek at Season 17. One unbelievable dance lead to another, and now I’m hooked once again. Week 1 was indescribable. Each performance got better and better. I was waiting for the first to fall or taper off the progression. Due to their “experience,” I didn’t expect much from Bill Nye and Valerie Harper, but they definitely entertained.
Okay, there seems to be some unfair advantages with performers in the mix but still, dancer for dancer, this is a talented season. With the stiff competition and the sentimental vote for the elder dancers, you cannot predict who’s going home each week or who’s going to win the DWTS mirrorball.
Skipping ahead to Week 2, here’s my favorite with Jessie Spano aka Elizabeth Berkley dancing samba.
My Largest Social Network Is…
Surprisingly, Pinterest. Yes, Pinterest. That Pinterest, the visual bookmarking site that had its start with crafters. I joined in April of 2011 and not finding pins that strongly piqued my interests, I started pinning stuff that I was attracted to, namely kicks. Of my various Pinterest boards, my Kicks Pinboard is the most active with 573 pins and over 2600 followers.
That amount of followers easily eclipses any of my other social networks, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, and even Plurk (my favorite social networking underdog). So whatever magic and mojo Pinterest possess, I can attest to it.
Girl Scouts Are Not Natural Bliss
Did you see Coffee-mate’s new creamer called Caramel & Coconut? This new flavor is a collaboration with the Girls Scouts, but odds are you probably overlooked this new creamer thinking it’s part of the Natural Bliss line.
Just look at the packaging, and you’ll understand how you can easily mistake this creamer. And if like me, you had a unflavorable run in with these natural creamers, like me, you now tune them out.

But the Girl Scout flavors are not Natural Bliss as visually indicated by the red cap (and lack of Natural Bliss labeling). I found this at Target by the way.
Similar Reactions to iOS7 and the Air Jordan 11
The love it or hate it reactions to Apple’s newly released iOS7 mobile operating system remind me of the Air Jordan 11 when it launched. There is no middle ground with both iOS7 and the AJ11 polarizing its audience.

Too shiny, too unconventional, too flashy, too bold – the naysayers described the XI, initially including myself. When I first saw these Jordans, I was so confused. I really hated them, two tone black and white, and the leather, the shiny patent leather that no kicks used. But then, look at them, watch them move, look at the simplicity yet sophistication of the design, notice the elements combining together, see the possibilities, truly see the Air Jordan 11. Then love them. Love the most iconic design of the Air Jordan line. Watch it endure over the decades with retro after retro, colorway after colorway.
Now look at iOS7. Tinker Hatfield meet Jony Ive. iOS7 is definitely bold and bright, the apps fly around the screen, its flat UI is unconventional (no buttons?), but yet it all works. It just works. Maybe this isn’t the pinnacle of iOS, but it just may endure the test of time as users learn to love it.
Five Offbeat Tips for Cruising with Disney
With its legions of dedicated fans, pretty much everything about the Disney Cruise Line has been documented and discussed. But I’m adding five tips off the well-known path while cruising with Disney.
- Before digging into all the great food, just don’t eat the food in front.
- Don’t match everyone else’s Disney looks, be original and wear Disney Crazy Shirts.
- Watch out for the shampoo. It burns your eyes.
- Make your stateroom easier to find by decorating it, but door decorating requires strong magnets.
- Did you get everything packed? Now pack even more bags inside your bags.
Unabashedly Britney
Out of nowhere, Britney Spears released a new single on Sunday, and her latest is unabashedly Britney. Check out the first few lines of Work B**ch.
You want a hot body? You want a Bugatti?
You want a Maserati? You better work bitch
You want a Lamborghini? Sippin martinis?
Look hot in a bikini? You better work bitch
Oh, it seems Work B**ch was leaked on the Internet over the weekend so Britney took her own advice and worked to push up the song release date. Now you can legitimately own Work B**ch.
Listen to Linkin Park’s Latest
Linkin Park teamed up with DJ Steve Aoki on their latest single, A Light That Never Comes. You can listen to this song exclusively on Xbox Music. Yes, Xbox has their own music service (I didn’t know or hadn’t bothered to know).
I like the song but the title kinda reflects my position with the Xbox Music service – A Light That Never Comes. Will music fans come to Microsoft’s music service? It’s an already crowded space with Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, Rdio, iTunes Radio, Google Play Music, and others I don’t know about. But I will buy the single once it’s available on iTunes.
DCL Tip: Pack Your Bags
Excited about your upcoming vacation with the Disney Cruise Line? What will you pack? What will the weather be like? Will it be hot, will it be cold? Will you encounter 50-degree temperature swings? With so much to consider While packing your bags, here’s my packing tip – pack a few more bags in your bags. Yes, pack additional bags in your bags, specifically a primary pack, a secondary pack, and several “handy packs.”
Primary Pack
Your primary pack should be a medium-sized backpack. Not small but not meant to haul all either. This pack will hold items for a day especially when your luggage isn’t available like during embarkation and debarkation. For long shore excursions, your primary pack needs to hold jackets, food, drinks, cameras, and anything else while away from your ship. I went with the Borealis day pack from The North Face through Zappos.
The North Face makes some great quality gear, and you’ll pay for that. However, during the summer months, watch clearances at Zappos. They’ll be clearing inventory to make way for new back to school gear. So if you don’t mind last year’s model, you can easily get lower prices. Even better prices are had by being bold with colors. There’ve been even steeper discounts on the more exuberant-colored packs. That’s how I ended up with my Borealis pack in tofino blue plaid.
The Borealis has a capacity of 29 liters and offers up two expandable side pockets for bottled drinks. What’s also useful is the external bungee cord that can quickly cinch down jackets.
Secondary Pack
Once on-board, you won’t need everything in your primary pack and can unburden yourself. But yet, you’ll need some carrying capacity, and that’s why you need a smaller, lighter secondary pack. My suggestion is a single strapped backpack aka a monopack. This monopack is from Eddie Bauer, but unfortunately, it’s now sold out. If you’re lucky, you may be able to find one in a brick and mortar store like REI.
Small and light yet tough, this Eddie Bauer mono can hold light jackets, a DSLR, a camcorder, and comes with an external bottle holder. Sure, you can always run back to your stateroom to grab a jacket for a family member, but it’s just easier to have that jacket available. And while on the Disney Wonder, you’ll never know when you’ll need your camera for a shot with Mickey or Goofy or to capture that fleeting moment of Alaskan wildlife.
“Handy Packs”
My last bag tip is to bring along several zip lock bags, the quart and gallon sized ones. They’ll come in handy. If you have an excursion that’ll make you miss a meal, grab some food from Goofy’s Galley or Pinocchio’s Pizzeria and bring it along in your sealed zip lock bags. That’s what we did while fishing with with Captain Jerry. Slices of pizza, sandwiches, and paninis while on the Pacific Ocean is a simple but amazing meal. Don’t let your litter spoil the natural beauty of Alaska by re-using your zip locks for trash. There are many more uses for the zip locks…as long as you have them.
No matter what you’ll definitely have an enjoyable, memorable stay on your Disney cruise. But having an extra bag (or three) will make things just a bit easier.
Cronuts in South Carolina Are Gangsta

I admit that I’m ignorant about Charleston, South Carolina, but now I know that the cronut craze has traveled south from New York. You can visit Kaminsky’s for their cronut interpretation.
The Kaminsky version is spelled “Kronutz” with a “z” like a good rapper name, and the squared-off cut of the Kronutz give them an edgy look. Gangsta. I’m hoping they offer smaller versions of the Kronutz called the Lil ‘Nutz.
Hostess, the Sweetest Comeback
The sweetest comeback by Hostess is well underway. First Twinkies and cupcakes began showing up on shelves. Now, other Hostess treats like Ho Hos are appearing.

And don’t forget, as part of this sweetest comeback in the history of ever is the return of the Cinnamon Roll.

Say what?! I didn’t even know Hostess offered this bakery classic. I think Hostess could have left the cinnamon roll off the comeback list, and they would be okay.
Learning About Heel-Toe Drop for Shoes
With Nike’s recent Terra trail running line, the Swoosh is emphasizing the 4 mm differential between the toe and heel. I’ve never seen this type of detail before in typical Nike product information. So what’s with this?
Here is some useful information I found on this subject.
- Heel-Toe Drop or Offset: What Does it Mean in a Running Shoe?
- Why heel-toe drop can mean different things for different running shoes and different foot strikes
- Can someone explain toe/heel drop in shoes?
But like the last link mentions, it all depends on you and your feet. So best to try the shoes yourself. Zappos, calling Zappos…
