More On Popularity and Likeability in the Workplace

This topic came up before, but the Honolulu Advertiser has another, very similar article about likeability being a very valuable job skill. The main gist is that coworkers would rather partner with someone who’s nice and likeable (but incompetent) than a competent jerk. I’d agree with that.

The article also categorizes workers as four different types:

  • Competent jerk – knows a lot but is unpleasant to deal with
  • Lovable fool – doesn’t know much but is great to have around
  • Lovable star – both smart and likeable
  • Incompetent jerk

Which one are you (no, honestly)?

Marketing Shaq vs Kobe, the Plan

When I started my Marketing Shaq vs Kobe campaign, I didn’t plan out all the rounds but instead took things as they came up. Here’s the rounds as they stand now with Kobe leading Shaq, 4-2.

To provide a definite end point of this comparison, here’s what I have in mind for the final rounds.

  • Round 3c, Team Attendance at the end of the regular season
  • Round 7, ???
  • Round 8, Likeability. Who’s more likeable and therefore, more marketable?
  • Round 9, The Triple Threat of Sports, Music, and Acting. Who’s marketable to the major entertainment segments?
  • Round 10, Post Season Success. Who has a better NBA post season. Bonus points if either wins a championship.

Need to find one more comparison point for Round 7. Any ideas?

New Comments on the Hottest Local Newscasters

Over the weekend, there were two more comments on an old favorite, Hottest Local Newscasters. Not sure why there was activity but if you want to relive some memories (and more discussion about Tasha Kobashigawa), check out these old posts.

On the subject of local newscasters, I saw Howard Dashefsky at Safeway and someone that looked like Beth Hillyer over the weekend in Kailua.

Premium Roast Coffee at McDonalds

Today’s newspaper had McDonalds ads for some of their new items, including a free Premium Roast Coffee. Unlike the McDonalds’ deathtraps of Windward Mall and Pearlridge Uptown, Enchanted Lakes still has a McDonalds so I decided to give their new coffee a try.

It’s not too bad. Better than the coffee they had before. Their Premium Roast has some body to it and doesn’t taste hollow or weak. I would say compared to a Starbucks mild coffee of the day, the McDonalds Premium Roast can hold its own. Don’t get me wrong, this coffee can’t compare to a specialty drink from Starbucks, but for a regular cup of coffee, it’s good. It sure beats the stuff they serve at work!

I didn’t catch the price of the coffee, but I’d guess it’s cheaper than Starbucks as well.

Continuing with team attendance figures from Round 3a, both the Lakers and Heat have played around 60 games. At this snapshot in time, the Lakers have a small edge in overall attendance.

Battlestar Galactica Season 2 Finale – Wow!

Wow, what a finish to the second season of Battlestar Galactica. Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2 was a stunner in the last 30 minutes. Talk about changes in the story line. Here’s an interview with BSG producers that include spoilers from this episode.

Strategy for Deal or No Deal


With all the odds and dollar value calculations in Deal or No Deal, the show is ideal for statisticians, guys who figure out insurance rates, and engineer types.

If I were on the show, my strategy would be to minimize the numbers aspect of the game. I’d pick my suitcases based on other factors such as the model’s appearance or ethnicity. Get rid of the suitcases with blonde models or keep only the suitcases with the Asian-looking models. You know, stuff like that.

Stupid show.

Good Comparison of Mac Web Publishing Apps

O’Reilly has a good comparison of popular web publishing apps for the Mac. Author, Giles Turnbull, briefly describes his experiences with iWeb, RapidWeaver, and Sandvox.

While I’ve heard about these apps, I never got the time to check them all out. I’ve played around with iWeb and agree with Giles’ conclusions. Never tried RapidWeaver but was tempted. I have the Sandvox beta and tried it once. It’s a good start but it does feel beta. Sandvox’s pagelet and integration with Flickr, Digg, and other tools is cool. Maybe… when it goes final.
