Starbucks Endcap at Safeway Kailua

As the remodeling of the Safeway in Kailua makes progress, a recent addition was this new endcap display. It’s all for Starbucks.

Saw this sign at Starbucks in Kailua but don’t think this welcome (back) sign is for Melody Overton aka Starbucks Melody.

Starbucks Melody covers the latest and greatest about all things Starbucks and has quite a following. She recently published a book, Tales of the Siren, about her Starbucks experiences. You can buy it online or even win one in a contest.
So you’re 24 years young, making millions playing a game you love, and just achieved a major milestone. Who cares if Michelle Wie partied it up a bit to celebrate. What is funny is Gregg Hammer’s impersonation of a golf announcer doing the play calling for Michelle’s against-the-wall twerking. Take a listen…

According to HECO, a major section of Kaneohe was without power this morning mainly affecting commercial businesses like Starbucks. The 24-hour drive-thru rendered worthless, the early-opening-but-can’t-access Starbucks inside Windward Mall unavailable. Still though, the green aprons of the mermaid showed up to work, just to apologize to caffeine-addicts.
Maybe the Windward City location had power and could serve up coffee or a Dirty Oprah.

The voice boomed over the public announcement loud speakers:

Repeat. There are strong currents on the left and right sides of the bay. Stay in the middle away from the white buoys, especially if you are not a strong swimmer. Stay away from the white buoys.”
Looking around the idyllic beach at Hanauma Bay, I saw many foreign tourists. Did they understand the lifeguard’s warning? Would the life-saving message be translated to other languages? Yes! The lifeguard is multi-lingual. He translates his warning into Japanese.
Abunai, white buoy. Abunai, white buoy.

I kid you not. I guess abunai more or less sums up the situation.
A few more shots to go along with yesterday’s view.
That’s Hanauma Bay in the morning. It wasn’t as packed being a weekday, but as usual, the crowds kept ebbing and flowing throughout the day. I still can’t believe how many smartphones I saw in those ziplock “waterproof” bags. I guess they work, but the protection seems questionable.
Best moment of the day. After making fun of people using iPads to take pictures, a tourist couple asks @okamiNYC to take their pic…with an iPad Mini. What’s the word for that? Indignity? Ignominy? At the end of the day, Bklyngrl enjoyed the tram ride.
Then it was off to Kokonuts in Koko Marina to cool off. Their shave ice is soft and refreshing but takes some time to make. I gave them a three-star rating on Yelp, mainly because of the speed.
On the way back to Kailua, we stopped by some scenic spots to check out the natural beauty of Oahu. Can you spot the Kona Ice truck parked at Sandy’s? The gusting winds brought some nice blowhole action.

Crispy, crunchy, smokey – you can’t stop.

The menu isn’t complicated featuring a variety of tacos, but everything we tasted was great. Everything was flavorfully seasoned, but the secret is with the sauce pairing. Each taco comes with its own perfectly complementary sauce. The tacos are on the smaller side but are sufficiently filling.
If you want something heftier, definitely go with the Tortaguesa. Basically, it’s a burger, but oh what a burger it is. The sweet and spicy habanero sauce contrasts the earthy beef excellently. Do you dip the burger, pour the sauce on? No matter, just use it all up. The Tortaguesa was my favorite.

I’m not sure how often Cocina’s menu changes, but here’s a (blurry) shot of their current menu.

Check out Yelp for more reviews.

The one benefit of the Disney Aulani fitness center being temporarily closed during my stay? Going out for morning runs and catching these sights.
I guess the trials went well since it appears Starbucks is prepping to roll out their handcrafted sodas on June 24, 2014. Yep, sodas, not tea or coffee. I spied a “soda fizzer” (my term) at a local SBUX waiting to be installed.

Coffee and caffeine addiction isn’t just for humans. It seems the brown elixir has an avian attraction as well. So much so that Starbucks needed to take counteractive measures.
First off, the once pure black roof of the Starbucks kiosk at Ala Moana isn’t pure black anymore thanks to the birds.

This is definitely one way to keep the birds away from Starbucks.
