Hawaii’s Wealthiest Zip Codes
The September 15 issue of the Pacific Business News has a neato feature of Hawaii’s wealthiest zip codes based on 2006 median household income. So now it’s official – Mililani residents are loaded!
Here is the top ten of the list (2006 median household income):
- 96821 Aina Haina, Niu Valley, Waialae Iki ($103,545)
- 96825 Hawaii Kai, Portlock ($97,091)
- 96789 Mililani ($81,340)
- 96734 Kailua ($81,312)
- 96744 Kaneohe ($81,103)
- 96707 Kapolei, Makakilo, Kalaeloa ($77,902)
- 96706 Ewa Beach ($74,396)
- 96701 Aiea ($74,182)
- 96782 Pearl City ($73,697)
- 96797 Waipahu ($72,053)
The list also includes the average annual amount spent on food, food away from home, alcoholic beverages, entertainment and recreation, housing, and transportation. Even though Mililani is ranked #3 by zip codes, residents spend the least on food out of the top 5 zip codes.

I Approve This Message… and More
After I just got done poking fun at politicians’ commercials ending with the silly phrase, “I approve this message,” they go ahead and make it work. I’ve now seen or heard two commercials that end with the familiar “I approve this message,” followed by additional words that place this statement in a better context.
Mazie Hirono’s most recent television spot ends with her saying, “I approve this message, and I hope you do too” (or something close to that). A previous commercial has her saying “I’m Mazie Hirono and I’m honored to approve this message.”
Driving to work today, I heard a radio commercial for Ed Case that had a modified approval statement as well. Unfortunately, I forgot his exact words, but I did like the variation.
I guess someone out there is listening after all.
More "Evidence" New iPods Are Coming
Okay, okay, I use the term “evidence” loosely, but here’s another indicator that a new iPod Nano is possibly in the works. Central Pacific Bank is giving away Nanos when customers sign up for the Exceptional Account. What’s an Exceptional Account? Who cares?!
The last time CPB had an iPod promotion, they were offering the 512MB Shuffles to customers. Soon thereafter, I believe Apple announced either the 1MB Shuffle or the first generation Nanos were introduced.
In either case, looks like the 1GB Nano is being cleared out for something else…
"I Approve This Message."
As election time rolls around again, more and more television commercials touting the virtues of politicians are being aired. Most, if not all, of these commercials end with the statement, “I’m <insert politician name here> and I approve this message.”
I never did understand what that’s for and what it means. Didn’t this commercial just talk about your hard work, sterling ethics, and what you can offer the political scene? Of course you approve this message since you just said it! Would be outright dumb if you just touted yourself then didn’t approve the message. I just don’t get it.
“I’m Gee Why and I approve this message.”
Exercise Urban Unrest a Success!
Wow, what an absolutely astounding success Exercise Urban Unrest was! This no-notice exercise kicked off yesterday afternoon with a traffic incident causing the shutdown of one of Oahu’s main traffic corridors. The exercise tested the capabilities and response of Emergency Support Functions 1 (Transportation) and 3 (Public Works and Engineering) simulating major evacuations of island residents during times of natural disasters or potential on-island terrorist incidents.
ESF1 and ESF3 did as superb jobs as possible, rerouting traffic and demolishing the damaged pedestrian walkway overnight. Scott Ishikawa, Department of Transportation spokesman, and Jason Yotsuda of the Honolulu Traffic Management Center should be commended for giving the stranded motorists constant information and updates of the situation.
Businesses and dining facilities in the downtown area also saw a huge economic windfall as many decided to wait for the H1 freeway to reopen before going on the road. This business increase will be noted and captured in after action reports.
Exercise Urban Unrest was initiated by an Army vehicle transporting heavy equipment to Schofield Barracks hitting a pedestrian walkway spanning the H1 Freeway. The damage made the walkway unsafe for crossing pedestrians and freeway drivers as debris continually dropped to the roadways below.
Okay, okay, Exercise Urban Unrest is totally fake cause the Army can’t make a mistake like that, can they?
Another Lost Arrest
Either Hawaii has very diligent law enforcement or the actors on Lost are just a rowdy bunch. Over the weekend, there was yet another Lost arrest. This time, Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), was arrested in Waikiki for disobeying a police officer and driving without a license.
To keep the arrests culturally diverse, I think Daniel Dae Kim or Yunjin Kim will be next.

Russell Tanoue in Action (Sorta)
After going to the Aquarium, we decided to stroll around Waikiki since we’re rarely in the neighborhood. As we start our walk right outside of the Aquarium, I see this dude wearing some fly New Balance kicks (shoe fanatics see shoes first before faces). Then it hit me. That’s none other than the Tabasco Man’s idol, Russell Tanoue.
I guess he’s doing a photo shoot since a model appears a few seconds later.
We continue our walk for several minutes then head back towards the car. We pass by Russell again who looks like he finished shooting. I think that guy by the truck was getting a sampling of Russell Tanoue in action (or of the model who went topless!).
Went to the Waikiki Aquarium
Went to the Waikiki Aquarium to show our daughter different kinds of fish since she seems to like them. Haven’t been to the Aquarium for years, so it was kinda neat to see what was there again. The jellyfish are fun to watch floating around.
There’s some big fish on display.
I never heard of or seen a sea dragon before, but they look weird.
The seals were swimming around and having fun.
All in all, an enjoyable outing saying hi to the fish.
Great Harvest Bread Kailua Grand Opening
Just so happened to catch the Grand Opening of the Great Harvest Bread in Kailua in the Enchanted Lakes Shopping Center, right next door to Starbucks. Saw the sign that said Open so we went in.
Quite a few people were coming and going to check it out. Fellow high school alumni run this location and greeted us as we entered (wow, he has a good memory).
Lots of bread on hand. Got a peanut butter chocolate chip loaf. Is it me or are the prices lower? But looking at the loaf, it looks a little smaller. Also this location doesn’t have the full menu like other Great Harvests. Maybe later on, they’ll expand their selections.

Action at American Savings Bank
Not sure what was going on, but the Kailua branch of American Savings Bank looked like this today.
I assumed a bank robbery but didn’t see anything on the news. KGMB was there filming so something must have happened. Only thing I could find was this report about a bigger story involving ASB.

Brunch at Cinnamon’s
We made our way out to Kailua this weekend to have breakfast brunch at Cinnamon’s Restaurant. Someone had raved about the pancakes, specifically the Carrot ones, and we had a birthday to celebrate nothing to do so I thought why not.
MSO ordered the Sauteed Mushroom Omelette with homefries Hashbrowns Sauteed with Bacon and, I ordered the Veggie From-Scratch Eggs Benedict with homefries Chicken Cutlet Omelette and a Full Stack of Carrot Pancakes Pumpkin Walnut Pancakes was available for whoever wanted to try or had room to spare. Most thought the Carrot Pancakes Pumpkin Walnut Pancakes were a little overrated good but overall everyone enjoyed didn’t enjoy for their selection.
Service was wasn’t good and I had no a problem with tipping our server with a little more. My only gripe is the parking. What is this metered parking crap?! Can’t people enjoy a nice meal or shopping experience without having to already dish out $1.50 $0.60 for parking? Oh well. It was nice for a change since we hardly ever get out to that area.

Didn’t have the Chocolate Eclair pancakes on special so I went with something different. I shoulda stuck with the tried and true selections. I didn’t care for my chicken cutlet omelette, and MSO didn’t really like her Hashbrowns Sauteed with Bacon aka The Artery Clogger. Our waitress was slow as pouring thick syrup (she must be new).
We did see a high school classmate we haven’t seen since graduation. Sara C. recently moved back to Hawaii after being in Chicago. She has two sons and, her husband opened up Aloha Salad(?) in the Kailua area, next to Lanikai Juice. Will have to check it out.
