Hawaii Lingo, the Latest Technology Naming Fad

First there was the wiki then more and more technologies/products/services named after Hawaii lingo. For example, there’s the human-powered search engine Mahalo.com. Google’s OpenSocial social network platform has the internal code name of “maka-maka” as in high maka maka.

Now, FileMaker has announced Bento, the stylish personal database for Leopard. Maybe not the most Hawaii-based lingo, but go to Shirokiya or any plate lunch place and you’re sure to find a bento.

Telling a Story on Dancing with the Stars

Like everything else, each episode of Dancing with the Stars strives to tell a story. There’s the beginning, the middle, and hopefully, the climactic denouement. This week’s story, however, felt contrived and forced.

Week 8 of DWTS had a good start by yet again crushing the confidence of Jennie Garth. Though this time, her attitude was a little different. Instead of being completely dismantled, Jennie had a hint of defiance perhaps signaling a marked change needed for the finals. But can she finish her story before being voted off the competition?

The middle of the story was boring and non-dramatic. Cameron Mathison has plateaued and unfortunately cannot master the nuances of the dances that all the judges recognize. With only two weeks left in this season, it’s just too late for his story. Marie Osmond’s story has been overtold. With the Osmond PR machine in full gear, I’m tired of this story. All the extra activities have robbed Marie of practice time and it’s shown with content-lacking performances.

To lead the story to an enchanting end, the producers saved the top contenders for back-to-back performances. Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough got the only perfect scores of the night with their quickstep after a technically accurate but boring paso doble. Mel B and Maks couldn’t quite continue their story of perfection but still had a solid night.

Even though Helio and Julianne got a perfect score, I didn’t think it was their greatest (except for that wet, sloppy kiss Helio planted on Julianne at the end of their samba). It seemed more like the crowd, the show, and the judges were looking for any performance to laud since everything up to that point was pretty benign. Hence my feel that this show’s story was contrived. The ending needed a bang and the judges obliged.

You think one of the Kardashians or decathlete Bruce Jenner will be on DWTS next season? They were shown in the audience quite a few times.

Let the Detox Begin

Starbucks free giveaway of hand picked iTunes songs finally finished this week. That’s 37 songs in 37 days, and yes, I have all 37 songs. Fortunately, I didn’t have to go to Starbucks 37 times, but I sure did up my visits. Like any other caffeine addict, I like a cup of java, but even this promotion was testing my limits.


Now that the promotion is done, I can start cutting back and let the decaffeination detox begin. Oh look! The Holiday trio of flavors is now available! Peppermint mocha, my precioussssss.

A Star Studded Lunch Hour

Today’s been a slow day so I decided to take advantage of the downtime to run some errands during lunch. What a star studded lunch it turned out to be!

Starting off on a not-so-starry note, but I happened to pass by Mitsu-Ken where business was slow. After recent incidents, the okazuya had been closed for a few days but reopened yesterday. Business was flat. Even though it was lunch time, there was no line of hungry customers like there usually is and there was plenty of street parking. I tried taking pictures with my iPhone, but… hey wait, I don’t got an iPhone! 🙁 I guess their garlic chicken isn’t so tasty anymore…

Back to the stars. I trekked down to the Apple Store at Kahala Mall since the Ala Moana store was closed for renovation. While looking for the boxes of AppleCare, I noticed two familiar faces. Local news stars, Guy Hagi and Kim Gennaula of KGMB9, were there picking up a brand new Mac and HP printer. Cool, Mac fans! Dang it where’s that iPhone for pictures?!

While waiting in line to pay for my AppleCare, this guy comes up with a broken HP printer. It’s none other than Andy Bumatai who does his Night Time with Andy Bumatai talk show on KFVE. Another Mac fan and another missed iPhone photo opportunity! I wonder if Andy’s broken printer is the same one Guy and Kim got?

As I was headed back to my car, I saw yet another star. Work superstar Susie was cruising and about to get lunch from CPK.

Looking at the Top 5 of Dancing with the Stars

Hard to believe it, but Dancing with the Stars is down to its top five contestants. Let’s take a quick preview.

Mel B and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Even though the couple continues to dazzle, I said they weren’t going to make the final three. With the surprising exit of Cheetah Girl, Sabrina Bryan, the couple’s place in the top three is safe. They better still have tricks up their sleeves to wow the judges. Getting all those perfect scores sets too high of a standard to maintain for the rest of the competition.

Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough. Last year’s champ is still dancing with Mr. Smiles. With Julianne’s choreography and Helio’s radiant smiles, this pair should join Mel B and Maks in the top three.

Jennie Garth and Derek Hough. The newcomer Hough is hanging in there with his sis and his basket case partner, Jennie Garth. Jennie’s progression on the show is the most interesting with her ups and downs, shaking her confidence. The arc to her story has the most potential and crowd appeal. If this headcase can hold it together, this MILF could actually win the mirror ball trophy.

Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska. They’re hanging on despite marked improvements. This couple always feels like they’re on their breaking point. I’m feeling they’ll be eliminated next week even though they’re better than Marie and Jonathan. Speaking of which…

Marie Osmond and Jonathan Roberts. The Osmond PR machine is in overdrive. Yes, I am saddened to hear about the passing of the Elder Osmond, but is it me or does it seem like Donnie and Marie are taking full advantage of this situation? An Osmond reunion on Oprah? Oh please! This extra publicity will give Marie one more week on DWTS, giving Cameron the boot.

My Brother, Dog Chapman

I always thought Duane “Dog” Chapman was a hip guy. I mean how else could he be what he is and dress the way he does without being a mockery?

So now, he’s apologized on national television for using the N-word and said the following:

I thought that I was cool enough in the black world to be able to use that word as a brother to a brother. I’m not… I now learned I’m not black at all.

Say what Dog? You ain’t black?!

Actually though, even though Dog’s words were heinous, I think his son’s betrayal of trust was a worse transgression. Selling out his own father (and family) to make “a lot of money” from the National Inquirer? 🙁

Jane Seymour Stereotyped Off of Dancing with the Stars

Jane Seymour and partner Tony Dovolani was the latest couple eliminated from Dancing with the Stars in Week 7. While imbuing elegance her entire career, this stereotype was her ultimate downfall. Watching Jane perform the saucy, gyrating Latin dances just didn’t look right. She tried to impart her natural class into these dances, but it just felt weird and unnatural.


Now all the older gentlemen have to find their jollies elsewhere instead of oogling the great looking Jane Seymour.

8 Now Means You Stink on Dancing with the Stars

It is inevitable that the judges of Dancing with the Stars change their scoring baseline as the season progresses. In the first few weeks, a score of 8 meant you had potential and were doing very well. In the seventh week of competition, an 8 score now means you stink and need to up your game to stay in the competition.

With six couples remaining, the two-dances-per-week performances have begun, and many struggled, getting scores of 8. I missed Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough’s tango but thought they did well in their samba with Helio’s infectious smile. Marie Osmond continues to dumbfound me with her continued success. Even though not the most physically gifted and one of the elders on the dance floor, she is flat out an entertainer. Her military tribute quickstep and colorful cha cha are sure to bring in votes.


After a mediocre foxtrot, Mel B and Maks predicted they would kick some serious a$$ with their paso doble, and they did. Dancing to En Vogue’s Free Your Mind, their flesh baring, dominatrix routine left the judges speechless. Maybe they haven’t jumped the shark yet? This week should be the final one for Jane Seymour and partner Tony Dovolani. Their quickstep and cha cha were okay. Nothing bad but nothing great.


The mind games of Jennie Garth is a fun thing to watch. She was emotionally massacred by the judges’ comments on her Viennese waltz and got those “you stink” 8’s, but then, when the going gets tough, Jennie gets dancing. Even with the romantic rumba, Jennie and Derek Hough were zoned in and had a great comeback performance. Again, the Houghs, Derek and Julianne, are great choreographers. What can I say about Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska. They continue to improve, but are they championship caliber?

The Tabasco Man Wins (Again!)

Congratulations to the Tabasco Man for winning Pulpconnection’s Blackout Giveaway! He predicted that Pulpconnection would reach 35,000 visits on November 6 at 11:21 PM, and the milestone actually occurred the morning of Monday, November 5.
