Prepping for Leopard Install

I’m getting my recent iMac ready for a Leopard install/upgrade. I already missed out on getting an big external drive for Time Machine. 🙁

To make sure my software is up-to-date, I found AppFresh that makes sure all your junk is updated. It’s pretty cool and fast. AppFresh not only notifies you of available software updates, but it can download and install the software for you. Very nice. Yikes, I have 72 apps out of date!

I hear making a complete backup is the way to go for a Leopard upgrade. I’ll have to look at the free Carbon Copy Cloner and see if I have an external drive big enough to clone my drive.

By now, I hope you’ve heard about and checked out WeGoEat.com, a directory of all the best restaurants in Hawaii. But what’s the deal with WeGoEat.com and where is this site headed? Luckily, head developer Ryan Kanno was willing to answer a few of these questions for Pulpconnection readers.

Why did you create WeGoEat.com and how did you come up with the name?

I contribute to the Django project (look for me next time you download it). It’s a Python web framework very similar to Ruby on Rails. I wanted to write technical articles to educate others on how to use it, and I figured that I better practice what I preached. Once I figure out all the Hawaii IP addresses, I want to restrict registration to only people in Hawaii. Everyone else will only be able to read reviews. I’m hoping two things: 1) The people of Hawaii will take it for what it’s worth – A forum to voice opinions about their favorite eatery and that 2) People outside of Hawaii will realize that though places like Yelp are neat, but what better place to get an opinion than from the people who live and breathe the culture. The local market is something that Googs/Yahoo have a tough time competing and I’m hoping to fill a niche. Also, since I’m pretty accessible, I can turn pretty much anything into a reality in terms of functionality/features, etc. Try requesting Yahoo to change their Fantasy Sports or a new feature to Gmail and see if that goes anywhere. 😉 Whew.

And of course, WeGoEat for obvious reasons… just something said a lot @ my family parties. 🙂

Where did the idea for WeGoEat.com come from and what makes this site different?

I just chose a market that I thought needed help. I haven’t really thought to differentiate it feature wise (yet), but I am hoping to differentiate it community wise.

What’s the long term vision for WeGoEat.com?

I’d like it to become a forum for Hawaii people to voice their pleasures/concerns/etc about places to eat. Ideally, restaurant owners will check it out to see what people are saying and improve, damnit. 🙂

How many active developers are working on this project?

Ahahahahahha. You’re kidding right? 😉 1.

What features are planned for the future? A Facebook app? Embed into blogs? Integration with software like IconFactory’s DineOMatic?

All of the above is viable. I’m tracking how people are using the site in Googs Analytics now and wanted to let the usage dictate the features. I figured the first thing I’d write is a little Javascript to embed your favorite restaurants into your blog. DineOMatic looks neato. I just emailed them to see what it would take to integrate. I wanted to work on a “magic-wheel” where you put in criteria and out comes a random restaurant, but I wanted a Flash developer for that (hint, hint). Ideally, I’d like to display menus as well, but that’s seriously time consuming unless I can get buy in from the restaurants to input their own menu. Finally, I’m always reading about ‘Hawaii’s’ best restaurants by some random questionnaire conducted by the Advertiser or Honolulu Magazine – I’d seriously love to audit their results especially since there’s usually some serious conflicts of interests (the people you are paying to advertise with are saying you’re one of the best in Hawaii)… I’m hoping this site will let the people speak volumes about what really is the best in Hawaii. 🙂

New Blogger Feature

Blogger rolled out a new feature today, letting blog readers follow comments via email. For each post, there’s now a “Email follow-up comments to:” field where you specify your Gmail address to receive updates of the post’s comments.

Yes, you can only use a Gmail account for email subscriptions. Still though, very useful for tracking active conversations like what’s going on at Easier Said Than Done.

Eiy Ya! Daniel Dae Kim Arrested for DUI?

It was too good to last. Call it the curse of LOST, but another LOST actor was arrested for driving under the influence. This time Daniel Dae Kim was tagged by Hawaii’s Finest early Thursday morning.

Does this spell out the demise of Jin, Dae Kim’s character on LOST?

Other LOST DUI notables include Michelle Mayte Rodriguez, Cythnia Watros, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko).

Daniel, you know I was kidding when I pondered that you’d get a DUI to keep the arrests culturally diverse, right?

WeGoEat.com Launched

Some local software developers got together and came up with WeGoEat.com which recently launched. WeGoEat.com is described as “a directory of all the best restaurants in Hawaii” and while still in its startup stage, there’s some promise.

I think some of the features are not functional yet, but the listing of Hawaii restaurants looks complete.

Hmmm, seems like the site doesn’t work right with Mac OS X Safari. Sometimes the Google Maps don’t show. Works better with Firefox.

Mac OS X Leopard and External Hard Drives

Subconsciously, I’ve been looking to get an external hard drive for Mac OS X Leopard’s Time Machine just as Paul Stamatiou pointed out.

This week, Circuit City has a decent sale on those 500-GB Western Digital vertical standing My Book series. The Essential Edition 2.0 only has USB 2.0 while the Home Edition features USB 2.0 but also FireWire 400, and eSATA. A $40 difference between the 500-GB Essential ($129.99) and Home Editions ($169.99) at Circuit City.

So it’s get the Home Edition for $40 more and use FireWire or buy the Essential Edition and a USB hub for $50 since my current hub is full.

Cuban Cut from Dancing with the Stars

He tried and he tried, but Mark Cuban just couldn’t make it and was cut from Dancing with the Stars. He tried to change the game to play to his strengths, but it might have been a case of too little too late.

As thought, Marrie Osmond’s fainting spell garnered a boost of support with Marrie and partner Jonathan Roberts not falling in the bottom two despite receiving identical scores as Mark Cuban and Kym Johnson. Instead Jane Seymour and Tony Dovolani were in the red spot light, edging out Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough.

Bravo to Mark Cuban for his run and loss of 30 pounds.

Thud…Oh Crap! on Dancing with the Stars

Marie Osmond started this week’s Dancing with the Stars in grand fashion, collapsing after doing her samba. While getting their first critique from Len Goodman, Osmond fainted which she later admitted as being somewhat a common recurrence. When gaining consciousness, her first words were “Oh crap!” It’s a good thing she didn’t see their scores of all 7s.

While I doubt Marie’s fall was a staged gimmick, it probably saved her and Jonathan from elimination this week. I mean who’s going to cut her after undergoing a mild medical problem? This spells bad news for Mark Cuban and partner Kym Johnson who also received a combined score of 21.


First off though, I must say that Cuban is a smart, smart man. No duh, he’s a gagillionaire, but did you see his strategy this week? Mark knows he’s outskilled in the technicalities of dancing so instead he’s trying to change the game where he can then succeed. Cuban brings in the fun factor even for a sensual samba. And yes, he went there. He did the I Dream of Genie getup with Genie Kym Johnson doing things pre-pubescent boys dreamed about. Along with Joey Fatone’s Princess Leia as Jabba the Hut’s prisoner routine (also with Kym Johnson), I Dream of Genie has got to rank up there in guy fantasies. So while still doing the proper dance, Cuban brought in other facets to be competitive.

Also, I might have missed it due to a brainfart, but I admire how Cuban doesn’t pull stunts with a celebrity support cast. For each star dancer, eventually you see other celebrities in their corner rooting for them. Jennie Garth has Ian Ziering from 90210. Marrie has her brother Donnie, Mel B has the obligatory Spice Girls, and I think there was a Cheetah Girl or two in the audience, but I haven’t seen a member of the Dallas Mavericks in the audience or as part of Cuban’s dance training. It’s always his family. Instead of relying on stars to bring in extra votes, Mark continues to feature and rely on his family for support. Very admirable I say.

Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas continue to show no weaknesses no matter the style of dance. Helio Castroneves’ smile is Samson’s hair and the source of his strength. Take away his smile and there goes his dancing ability. Helio and Julianne Hough might actually land in the bottom two this week which might be a mixed blessing. I’m guessing Mark Cuban will be eliminated, and Helio and Julianne will receive compensating fan support in the following weeks.
